This is a great example of how access to public records can inform important investigative reporting.

We don't know exactly what tattoos were targeted here. But thanks to @PropOTP, we /do/ have some DHS documents from 2023-24 coaching agents on what to look for. And last week, @reichlinmelnick, @ariehkovler, & Bluesky user TyGrey noticed something odd... xitter.cf/ReichlinMelnick/status…
NEW: Another documents filed by the ACLU is an unclassified ICE document showing what it alleges are Tren de Aragua tattoos. The @nypost also published these in 2024. But reverse image search shows these images were stolen from the internet and have nothing to do with TdA! 🧵

📷 Attorneys for the Venezuelans accused of being members of criminal gang Tren de Aragua said their clients were targeted for tattoos unrelated to the gang. The US government advised workers that identifying TdA members by tattoos is a severely flawed method. We got the docs:
DHS/FBI docs cast significant doubt on the use of tattoos to identify membership in Tren de Aragua, the gang at the center of much of Trump's mass deportation frenzy, as revealed in new intel docs we obtained and shared w/ @willcarless/@USATODAY. #FOIA usatoday.com/story/news/poli…

The feds work closely with corporate security. DHS for instance has a whole intelligence sharing program that puts IC officers with “private sector partners” to share intel. It’s not surprising then that terrorism designations are based in part on lobbyist rhetoric.
Why did FBI outrageously designate animal rights/enviro movement the #1 domestic terror threat? In part b/c FBI relies heavily on industry front groups for its "intelligence," as reflected in this doc re receiving "valuable" intel from notorious Center for Consumer Freedom #FOIA
