Sadly, California's Prop 36 passed. It will slash MILLIONS from reentry & prevention services while growing the state's prison population by 35% over 5 years for theft & drug charges.

Prop 36 is a step backward for California.
This measure targets our most vulnerable communities, especially those with disabilities, by increasing incarceration & reducing funding for crucial services.

Vote NO on Prop 36.
It’s going to reinstitute long, mandatory prison terms for nonviolent offenses, eliminate safety, care, and prevention programs, and is funded by big box corporations like Walmart, shady dark money groups like the California Business Roundtable, private prisons, and sheriffs. It’s the largest one-time investment in CA’s prison system ever.
Spread the word.

❗️“MORE ILLUSION THAN SOLUTION”❗️
Prop 36 bills itself as a solution to retail theft and fentanyl– but it’s NOT. These problems need to be addressed, but Prop 36 will actually defund successful rehabilitative programs by hundreds of millions of dollars.

“Funded by savings from Prop 47, a 2014 criminal justice reform measure which has saved nearly $1 billion since voters approved it, Project Impact is one of dozens of programs created across [CA] that perform vital work with recently released prisoners.”

Make no mistake -- Prop. 36 is a prison spending scam that will defund successful drug treatment programs, make our communities less safe, and drag California back to an era of mass incarceration. #StopProp36
Prop 36 provides no new funding for treatment and will actually take hundreds of millions away from successful treatment programs. #StopProp36

ALT Cristine Soto DeBerry of the Prosecutors Alliance of California took issue with an element of Prop 36 that would make some drug crimes “treatment-mandated” felonies, meaning people could opt for treatment over incarceration. She said there are not enough existing addiction treatment programs or funding to serve everyone in need. Those who receive that sentence may need to be released or held in custody until a spot opens up, DeBerry said. “Prop 36 is not going to create that,” DeBerry said of drug treatment programs. “It is a wish. It is a hope. It is not a funding plan for making that happen.”
