Ever wondered who names cyclones and how these names are decided? Cyclones are not named randomly! The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and regional specialised meteorological centres coordinate the naming system. In the North Indian Ocean region, 13 countries contribute names to a pre-approved list. The 13 member countries are: 1. Bangladesh 2. India 3. Iran 4. Maldives 5. Myanmar 6. Oman 7. Pakistan 8. Qatar 9. Saudi Arabia 10. Sri Lanka 11. Thailand 12. United Arab Emirates 13. Yemen 5 things to know: 1. Each country submits a list of cyclone names. 2. The names are used sequentially. 3. Names should be short, easy to pronounce and culturally neutral. 4. Once used, a name is not reused. 5. Names associated with particularly devastating cyclones may be retired.

A proposed dam on the Cauvery River. Two states with competing water concerns. And a debate involving federalism, drinking-water security and environmental protection. The Mekedatu Project is more than an infrastructure proposal. Here’s why UPSC aspirants should understand it.

Why does this matter for GS II and GS I? GS II: • Centre-State relations • Cooperative federalism • Article 262 • Inter-state water disputes GS I: • Cauvery river basin • Peninsular drainage system • River-valley projects • Human-environment interactions

The bigger picture The Mekedatu debate brings four important priorities into focus: 1. Urban drinking-water security 2. Equitable distribution of river water 3. Environmental and biodiversity protection 4. Cooperation between riparian states For UPSC, remember: Inter-state river disputes are not just about water allocation. They also involve constitutional powers, ecological sustainability and federal coordination. Save this thread for your GS I and GS II revision.

Why is this launch important for the NavIC constellation? NavIC was designed around a seven-satellite constellation. With NVS-03, the system has regained the four satellites required for its minimum operational configuration. This is important for strengthening the continuity of independent regional navigation services.

The launch vehicle also made history. GSLV-F18 marked the 20th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. The mission was also completed after a turnaround of just 56 days between successive GSLV missions, the shortest such interval achieved by ISRO so far
