"the biggest benefit of a paid subscription is that you [help]...resist the extremist turn of academia and maintain islands of integrity in a sea of academic political corruption." How? I've dedicated the $ to projects, not my pockets.

Height hacking.
Something strange is happening with self-reported height among men: There aren’t enough 5’11” men, and there are too many 6’0” men. Hmmm…

Long but worth it:
More than 50 years ago, the great Paul Meehl wrote “Why I Do Not Attend Case Conferences.”
Every serious psychologist knew and quoted it. It was a masterclass in *how to think.*
It catalogued common fallacies among mental health professionals.
He named one “the spun-glass theory of the mind.”
He wrote:
“This is the doctrine that the human organism is constituted of such frail material, is of such exquisite psychological delicacy, that rather minor, garden-variety frustrations, deprivations, criticisms, rejections, or failure experiences are likely to play the causative role of major traumas.”
This was half a century ago.
Some in the mental health professions have no historical memory. They do not build on established knowledge or learn from past mistakes. They don’t just repeat them, they double and triple down on them.
The spun-glass fallacy is now endemic in therapy culture. Therapists not only embrace it, they act like it’s a moral virtue. Paul Meehl addressed this in his paper too. More than half a century ago.
Our intellectual forebears are rolling in their graves.

An oldie but a goodie. In 1968 a bunch of entitled hippy bastards sent a letter detailing their specious demands to the Warden and Fellows of Wadham College, Oxford. This was their letter of reply, which speaks to how far the academy has since fallen.
New post, link in reply. In which I expose and debunk the many very bad criticisms of leftwing authoritarianism that emerged in response to our report on relations between it, willingness to justify some types of political violence, and support for professional societies' recommendations for treatment of transgender people.

"He criticized two scales (RWA and Conway’s LWA) that were not the one’s we used. I mean, if you diagnose the mechanical issues of a 2005 Chevy Nova and simply declare that they apply to a 2026 Corvette, of course your analysis is ridiculous."

Masculinity, the liberal democratic west, merit, free speech, personal agency, capitalism/free markets, success*; many academics have a dim view of it all.
*known as "privilege" in much of academia.
A review of 65 masculinity measures classified 51 (78%) as deficit-focused, emphasizing negative outcomes associated with masculinity
Only 14 (22%) included ANY attention to masculinity’s strengths. That does not mean those measures focused primarily on strengths
Just 91 of 590 articles (15%) published in Psychology of Men & Masculinities between 2000 and 2018 had a positive focus
New guest post by @NickWolfinger, who is being investigated AGAIN (for nothing, really). Link in reply.
"Last week my department chair, whom I’ll call Eleanor, requested an urgent meeting ... Eleanor informed me that there had been six complaints about me. These complaints had been received at the university’s Office of the Dean of Students and communicated to the Office for Faculty ..."

"It turned out that the six complaints all came from the same student. I was only told about the three “major” complaints ... As of last year, anyone with a concealed weapon permit can open carry their weapon on campus ... I figure it’s good for students to know this just in case one of their classmates shows up one day packing heat ... So I told my students to notify me if they intend to show off their prized iron, and not to do so during class. The complaining student reported being triggered by the prospect of firearms show-and-tell."

Why can those on the Left so easily recognize misinformation on the Right but often fail to see it on their own side? Virtuous Nonsense brings together liberal contributors who not only see the problem but also want to fix it. Out now. @PsychRabble @omni_american @UtterlyModerate

New post (link in reply). In which Rutgers philosopher Justin Kalef argues:
New Guest Post, link in reply. "Double burden" refers to the claim that, combining paid work with domestic work, women work far more than men. Except, abundant evidence indicates this is just wrong.
unsafescience.substack.com/p…
In fact, tho, women ARE more stressed by having both paid/domestic chores than are men, even though men & women's total work is similar.

"We abstracted recommendations regarding transgender people and those experiencing gender dysphoria (wanting to be a different sex than the one they were born as) from the American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychiatric Association, and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, and turned them into agree/disagree questions. We referred to this as the Clinical Gender Affirmation Scale (CGAS).
We pre-registered predictions that the CGAS would correlate with leftwing authoritarianism (LWA) and with peoples’ expressed willingness to justify political violence. It did."

New post, jointly co-authored with @SwipeWright and @OhadFedida. Link in reply. "In the wake of its publication, it has received both praise and criticism. In our view, only an exceedingly small minority of that criticism has been serious and offered in good faith, while the rest can only be described as absurd distortions of our work fueled by an activist moral panic."

On a side note, I bet the great Scott Lilienfeld would have been interested in this study, if he were still around. Left wing authoritarianism was intriguing him in the late 2010s.
