The cancellation of Martin Gero’s Stargate series feels like an even bigger missed opportunity when you consider the timing. The series would have arrived in the same year as the 30th anniversary of Stargate SG-1 — a perfect moment to celebrate the franchise’s legacy while launching its next chapter. Instead, Amazon MGM has left fans with a cancellation, a lot of unanswered questions, and a very loud outcry from a fandom that has been waiting years for Stargate to return. A 30th anniversary celebration, plus a brand-new Stargate series could have been a huge moment for Amazon MGM. A chance to bring longtime fans back through the gate and introduce an entirely new generation to the franchise. They didn’t just cancel a series. They have missed one of the biggest opportunities Stargate has had in years. #SaveStargate

Alienating the very audience that has kept Stargate alive for years is not doing you any favours. You don’t honour a legacy by pretending it never happened. You honour it by understanding why people loved it in the first place. Stargate isn’t just a title, a logo or a universe that can be wiped clean because starting again is easier creatively. It has decades of characters, mythology, relationships, humour, world-building and, most importantly, an audience that invested in it. And that’s why bringing the OG creators back initially felt like such a promising move. They understood the DNA of Stargate. They understood that you could evolve the franchise without throwing away everything that came before. That was the right track. But now, since the cancellation, the answer shouldn’t be “start from scratch because it’s simpler.” The challenge, and the opportunity, is to build the next chapter while respecting the chapters that made Stargate worth continuing. Fans don’t expect Stargate to stay frozen in the past. They expect it to remember where it came from. Amazon MGM, you have an opportunity to build something incredible here. Like the teams in Stargate, we know the mission isn’t always easy. Sometimes the odds look impossible. Stargate means so much to me because it’s never just been a TV show. It’s a universe built on curiosity, friendship, hope, and the idea that there are always worlds worth exploring. And the writing was so good. Brad Wright could put two people in a room and somehow turn it into gold. The dialogue, character work, humour and emotional stakes were exceptional. Then there were the performances. The level of talent those actors brought to these characters made Stargate feel real. You believed in them, cared about them, and wanted to follow them anywhere. That’s why the cancellation of Martin Gero’s show hurts so much. It feels like losing a chance to keep that spirit alive.
