My goodness. This is horrible officiating or horrible comms. I think it might be both.
A new episode of "Hauler Talk" has just dropped. A few takeaways:
-- NASCAR is saying that to get penalized for going below the double yellow line, a car must have the whole tire down there AND improve the position AND not be forced down there. So three things.
-- In Kyle Larson's case, he didn't go below the yellow line (was on it), so it's a moot point.
-- Austin Hill would likely have been black-flagged if he hadn't already finished as the last car on the lead lap. He was not forced below the line by Larson in Turn 2, NASCAR felt; Hill went down there himself AND improved his position. But they didn't call anything because the penalty would have put him right where he was.
-- Ross Chastain and Carson Hocevar went below the line but were not penalized because they were forced below the line by Todd Gilliland, NASCAR felt.
-- NASCAR looked at penalizing Gilliland but it was inconclusive whether he forced them down there on purpose, so they didn't make a call (but they could have and it was close, apparently).

On NASCAR's "Hauler Talk" podcast, Mike Forde says it doesn't matter that Bubba Wallace didn't actually complete a pass while below the double yellow lines; it's the attempt to improve his position that was the foul.
Forde: "If he did go below the yellow lines and eventually improved (his position) and he did that to improve it and he wouldn't have gotten to where he did without going below the yellow lines, that's really what matters here in this case. He doesn't actually have to make the pass while under the double painted line."
Also says the SMT data didn't matter about Wallace attempting to give the spot back after going below the double yellow line because there are no give-backs with this rule.

All i'm saying is if we penalize this, we should penalize Larson... Too bad he's the golden boy.

This is always my reference for the yellow-line rule these days. Never consistent, obviously. But this is pretty damn close to Justin Haley back several years ago. Haley had the win taken away. Nothing today
