I NEVER do this. I’m usually very quiet about situations like this, but what happened today genuinely shocked me to the point that I have to speak up on behalf of myself and my client, Cura Social Haus. Back in June, my client reached out to Mustafa about co-hosting a listening party centered around the album TAKE CARE. He initially expressed that it was a great idea, but ultimately told her he didn’t have the capacity to do the event with her. Cool. We respected that. So we decided to move forward and produce the concept ourselves, especially coming off the high of her first SOLD-OUT event as a small, intimate event curator. We were excited to keep building, creating, and carving out her own lane. We had to postpone the event but our materials are still up and we proposed a new date. Fast-forward to today… and suddenly there’s capacity? And not only is the event happening, but the concept is the same, down to the damn ALBUM? Like… damn. What?! It’s one thing to decline a collaboration. It’s another thing entirely to be presented with someone’s concept, say you don’t have the capacity to execute it with them, and then turn around and execute that same concept without them. Is this really who we are? Small curators and creatives already have to fight twice as hard to get their ideas taken seriously. The very least we can do is respect the people bringing those ideas to the table in the first place.
