This right here is a perfect illustration of how white privilege operates in American media, even in sports.
A’ja Wilson wins her FIFTH WNBA MVP award, further cementing herself as one of the greatest players in the history of women’s basketball. That’s a historic achievement worthy of celebration. But look at how Fox News frames the story. Rather than center the Black woman who actually WON, they center the white woman who received ONE first place MVP vote out of 74.
Let that sink in. A Black woman makes history, and somehow a white woman’s disappointment becomes the headline.
And the hypocrisy of Fox News is particularly glaring. This is the same network that routinely rails against DEI, attacks affirmative action, and lectures America about meritocracy. We’re constantly told that achievement should be based on merit, not race. Well, here stands A’ja Wilson, whose excellence, accomplishments, and dominance have earned her a place among the greatest athletes of all time. Yet somehow, we’re supposed to be more concerned about why Caitlin Clark wasn’t recognized.
Apparently, merit matters until a Black woman outshines the white woman they’ve decided should be the face of the league. This exposes a media culture that can barely acknowledge Black excellence without finding a way to center whiteness.
Black women have been dealing with this nonsense for generations. They have to be twice as good, accomplish twice as much, and prove themselves repeatedly, while white women are celebrated for their promise, potential, popularity, and proximity to greatness.
A’ja Wilson didn’t win an award for potential. She won because of PERFORMANCE. She didn’t need a media campaign to manufacture her greatness. She earned it on the basketball court.
One woman won her fifth MVP. The other received ONE first place vote and was left off 19 ballots. And Fox News decided the second story deserved the headline.
That’s not sports journalism. That’s a reflection of whose excellence America celebrates and whose accomplishments it struggles to center.** Black excellence shouldn’t have to compete with white mediocrity for recognition.**
Give A’ja Wilson her flowers without making Caitlin Clark the centerpiece of the bouquet. 👏🏾🏆

Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad tell Michelle Obama they were JEALOUS of each other’s beauty growing up, and connect it to the COLORISM and constant messages about SKIN TONE they heard as kids 😲👀
“We grew up with that foolishness, that colorism foolishness, because, you know, that brown paper bag foolishness. And I remember one time Phylicia loved chocolate milk, and we were drinking chocolate milk, and my uncle said to her, ‘Girl, you better drink all the WHITE MILK you can.’”

Spoke to Dream’s Rhyne Howard yesterday about the chest bumps between her and Angel Reese. She wants to make sure y’all know…
“People think I’m gonna get hurt but they don’t know when I was in college, I had Coach (Niya) Butts & she had just as tough as chest bumps as Angel…”

And of course I had to ask Dream’s Angel Reese about her chest bumps and if her teammates are prepared for them.
She said she’ll take it easy on Jordin Canada and DeWanna Bonner.
“I did it to JC and she almost fell out…”

VERY SPECIAL NEWS! The King Center is proud to announce A'ja Wilson as the 2027 recipient of the Center’s BELOVED COMMUNITY YOUTH INFLUENCER AWARD.
Join us in celebrating A’ja as we present her with the award at the 2027 MLK, Jr. Beloved Community Awards in Atlanta on Saturday, January 16, 2027. Stay tuned for more information on how you can attend and watch the Awards.
The BELOVED COMMUNITY YOUTH INFLUENCER AWARD recognizes individuals whose influence helps inspire, shape, and advance a more just, humane, equitable, and peaceful world for the next generation.
To be a champion for humanity is to recognize that our influence is bigger than our accomplishments. It is to use our platform to lift others, open doors, inspire possibility, and help shape a better future.
And when it comes to being an MVP for youth, A’ja Wilson is showing us what that looks like. A’ja is celebrated around the world for what she does on the basketball court. But her influence reaches far beyond the game.
Through the A'ja Wilson Foundation, A’ja is helping young people, particularly young girls navigating dyslexia and other challenges, recognize their worth, develop confidence, overcome stigma, and understand that their challenges do not define their possibilities. Her commitment to education, mentorship, compassion, inclusion, and creating spaces where young people can thrive reflects the kind of influence that can change lives.
From basketball courts to classrooms, from young girls finding their voice to young people around the world watching her lead, A’ja Wilson is demonstrating that true influence is about more than being seen. It is about what we help others see in themselves.
We are excited to celebrate A’ja Wilson as an MVP not only in basketball, but in her commitment to young people and to a future where every child has the opportunity to know their worth and reach their full potential.
🏀 A’ja Wilson - 2027 BELOVED COMMUNITY YOUTH INFLUENCER AWARD RECIPIENT
Congratulations, A’ja!

We talked about Paige Bueckers being one of the hottest players entering the postseason, and she showed exactly why in her playoff debut.
Bueckers scored 21 points on 90% shooting in just 25 minutes, becoming just the seventh player in WNBA history to record a 20-point playoff game while shooting 90% from the floor!
Whether she was being guarded the full 94 feet or facing different defenders from the league’s best defensive team, there was no slowing Bueckers down. ✨
