In the form of remittances, cross-border payments support more than 200 million people in Africa, according to the United Nations. In 2023, remittances into Africa reached $100 billion, more than Official Development Assistance and Foreign Direct Investments combined. In the form of trade, cross-border payments are the lifeblood of African SMEs, large corporations and Africa's fast-growing global services workforce. But slow legacy systems and hefty transaction fees tax this vital part of Africa's economic engine.
