SIU Says They Are Hunting For Eight Luxury Cars Allegedly Hidden By Alleged Tembisa Hospital Looting Kingpin Hangwani Maumela
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is pursuing information about eight luxury vehicles allegedly hidden by businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela as part of the Tembisa Hospital corruption investigation. The SIU-appointed curator visited a property in Midrand, Johannesburg, following an anonymous whistleblower report alleging that a Bentley belonging to Maumela had been concealed there.
The operation was intended to verify whether the Bentley was at the property, which was allegedly linked to one of Maumela’s associates. However, the vehicle was not found. The curator is acting in accordance with previous court orders requiring the vehicles to be placed under the curator’s control.
In October 2025, the Special Tribunal ordered the so-called Maumela Syndicate to provide a full disclosure, under oath, of all its movable and immovable assets, properties, funds and financial interests. The SIU previously obtained an order to preserve assets valued at approximately R900 million linked to the syndicate, while the preservation order cited by the SIU is valued at R503 million.
The SIU says the curator will continue tracing the eight vehicles and other assets to give effect to the court orders. Under the SIU Act, the unit is empowered to obtain bank statements and cellphone records, seize evidence and interrogate witnesses under oath. Any evidence pointing to criminal conduct will be referred to the National Prosecuting Authority for further action.
