(AP) — Famed motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel and his two young sons escaped injury Sunday in a boating accident which claimed the life of Knievel’s father-in-law, John C. Bork. Knievel told authorities the rubber boat in which the four were floating on the Madison River near Ennis capsized after running into a log which had fallen across the river. He said Bork, 63, was swept to his death an instant after pushing one of the youngsters to safety on the log. The four were on a duck-hunting trip, authorities said. Knievel, 34, and sons Kelly, 12, and Robbie, 10, made it to safety on an island. Knievel subsequently waded across the river and walked to a ranch to notify authorities, officials said. Bork’s body was found late Sunday on a sandbar about one-half mile from where the boat capsized and Knievel’s sons were rescued from the island about the same time, officials said. Authorities estimated the water was about 15 feet deep at the point where the raft capsized. As Knievel related the story: “The boat hit the log, bounced way up in the air and came down on top of all of us. Grandpa Bork pushed Robbie up on the log or he would have gone under. “My other son, Kelly, went under the water but I got ahold of his jacket and pulled him back up. Then Grandpa went under. He had on heavy boots and they filled with water. I had on boots, too, and couldn’t get to him.” Knievel said he and the two youngsters spent most of the day on the island yelling for help. But when no one came, and realizing that darkness would soon be approaching, Knievel said he decided to go for help.
