📊 What would Proposition A fund?
Proposition A would provide additional resources for locally identified priorities across Socorro ISD, including teacher and staff compensation, student programs, safety and security, student devices, and HVAC and bus replacements.
House Bill 2 creates new revenue for the district, but it does not provide enough to sustain operations. Proposition A would help close the gap and provide resources for these district priorities.

🏫 School Finance Quick Fact: Texas school districts have two tax rates.
The M&O rate funds day-to-day operations, including teacher and staff compensation, student programs, supplies and maintenance. The I&S rate pays debt on bonds for construction, renovations and other capital projects.
Proposition A would provide additional M&O funding for teacher and staff compensation, student programs, safety and security, technology, HVAC, and bus replacements.

👥 Socorro ISD is one of the largest employers in the community, with more than 5,300 employees who could receive a salary increase through Proposition A.
As health insurance premiums continue to climb, teachers could take home less without the salary increase Prop A would provide. Combined with larger class sizes, lower compensation could also contribute to increased teacher turnover.
Prop A includes $15 million to increase teacher and staff compensation.

The state requires armed security officers and additional safety measures at every campus, but does not fully fund those requirements.
Socorro ISD receives $57 per student in state safety and security funding, while the district’s actual needs total $144 per student, leaving the district to fund an additional $4 million annually.
Prop A would help maintain the safety personnel needed to meet these requirements, including appropriate funding for an armed officer at every campus.
