Today, Rhodes Music Radio stands in purple. We join South Africans across the country in saying enough to gender-based violence. Our profile picture has changed, not just for awareness, but for action, accountability, and solidarity. #EndGBV #RMR897

[TUNE IN] Tomorrow, 14 November, just after 1 pm (SA Standard Time), Professor Steve Olivier will be on Rhodes Music Radio @RMR897 to share stories about the late Ally Weakley, in whose honour the Great Field will officially be renamed on 23 November. Listen online to this heartfelt account at rhodesmusicradio.co.za/ and celebrate the life of one of Rhodes University’s most cherished alumni. But who was Ally Weakley, and why is this recognition so well-deserved? Ally stood against the apartheid-era South African Rugby Board, championing non-racial rugby and bravely playing in mixed-race teams despite threats from the authorities. He dedicated himself to uplifting youth from disadvantaged communities through rugby coaching, and, as a lawyer in Grahamstown, he fiercely fought for justice and equality. Tragically, his life ended abruptly when he was mistaken for a right-wing vigilante by a group of young activists. #RU120 #AllyWeakley
