Was invited by the Columbia Jinnah Forum at Columbia University to speak on media in Pakistan
Prior to this they had hosted Pakistan's Minister of State and Chairman of the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority Bilal Bin Saquib and then earlier this week former Supreme Court Justice Mansoor Ali Shah
The audience for my talk (titled "Unfiltered- Behind the Headlines. Off the Script") which was more of a conversation since that's always more interactive and hence better - comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students at Columbia.
The graduate students included at least four who had served in various posts with the Federal Government, including the Pakistan Administrative Service, Pakistan Revenue Service and the State Bank of Pakistan. There were students who had come from Pakistan and represented Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Multan. They were studying at Columbia College (the undergraduate part of the university), Columbia School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, SIPA (School of International and Public Affairs) as well as Columbia Law School
Many questions were asked including several that you expect to be asked of a journalist working in Pakistan. These related to
1. Censorship -- told them their is considerable self-censorship in the media
2. The role played by media owners in coverage and whether or not they hampered their own professional journalists from carrying out their duties -- many times they do
3. The role, and the financial viability of journalism and media in present-day Pakistan -- it had undergone a lot of change and posed many challenges, not everyone in media makes millions in salaries a month like some of the top anchors
4. How social and digital media have changed the media in Pakistan and how has traditional media responded -- the advent of digital and social media has transformed the media landscape -- both in good and adverse ways -- good because it has made itmore competitive and adverse because anyone can more or less take to social/digital media and start reporting and claim to be a journalist and gain a large following -- and in large part the traditional and legacy media have been in deep slumber and have failed to respond to these changes in any meaningful way which is why most of them are not doing too well financially
5. The advent of fake news and disinformation - and of echo chambers - for the former I said that media and legacy orgs have a direct interest in improving verification methods and fact checking techniques among their staff - and for fake news and disinformation people on their own also need to stop forwarding WhatsApp messages without verification
6. Other questions related to coverage in the news of various political parties and event - comparison of the media landscape in Pakistan with the US -/ told them a more apt comparison is with the South Asian and general region - for example look at what’s happening in India etc — also to the viability of being a journalist today — though many challenges it has opened up thanks to social media platforms which don’t require much by way of investment
The evening was followed by tea - the way we have it in Pakistan - at a local restaurant
The Columbia Jinnah Forum and PSA (Pakistani Students Association) people insisted on it - a special thank you to Isfandyar Khan, Haris Shah and Abdullah Yasir of the CJF for the invitation (always good to be invited to speak at one’s alma mater)

These two images depict the stark reality of femicide in Pakistan, which has now become a national emergency.
Hina Zareef , murdered by her own father under the false pretext of “honour,” with involvement of her family, after she refused to remain in a marriage that she had not consented to. Her father had given assurances on a stamp paper that he would not harm her prior to taking her back home.
Hina Javed another young woman, murdered by her husband , an Ex Nust University Professor just 10 months into their marriage. She had suffered severe torture, was beaten, and tied up in the bathroom. Her in-laws, suspected as accomplices, remain free.
Home is not a safe place for many women and girls in this country.
These grave crimes continue with impunity. Every day, another murder, rape, assault, or kidnapping of a woman makes headlines. yet governments across Pakistan remain without any strategy or pre-emptive action to end this.
This is a national emergency, and the state’s continued inaction is unacceptable.
Please raise your voice for these two young women, and for the countless others whose lives have been ended with such brutality.
Our sister Hina Javed was brutally murdered by her husband and in-laws two days ago. The father in law is still roaming around and has not been put under arrest.
@MaryamNSharif please help bring the criminals to justice.

Pakistan makes the world's clothes. The brand is never ours.
Rastah changed that. Bieber. Chalamet. London Fashion Week. All from Lahore.
Sat with Zain Ahmed (@zainoo_95) to understand how. The pricing strategy. The inventory disasters. The community that defended the brand and the future of celebrity endorsement.
Full episode out now.

Pakistan’s role has shifted from facilitator and go-between to direct mediator and peace negotiator (amid reports of 3-way talks taking place in Islamabad). For now at least, Pakistan’s in the driver’s seat in the difficult & delicate effort to guide the US & Iran to an off ramp.
Attended an incredible Friday Khutba on importance of reading in Islam—decline in reading for pleasure over 20 yrs has hurt comprehension. The first revelation to Prophet (PBUH) could have been “bismillah” or “in the beginning” yet was “Read in the name of your Lord who created”

It will take 123 years to reach gender parity, according to our newly released Global Gender Gap Report 2025. This may seem like a long time, but that figure was 132 years in 2024. Read the full report to learn more about progress towards parity: wef.ch/gendergap25 #gendergap25

I have been doing this and also adding spirit (prayer/meditation) to my days in my regular intervals. I think our daily routines should have quiet moments like this -- the tea, the books, the music -- and we need them. But they are essentially openings for spirit, for adding some soul to a constant grind, so I find myself taking spirituality out of the background and foregrounding it more than once a day.

My latest for @TeenVogue explores the horrific story of popular skincare ingredient Retin-A.
Before Retin-A was approved by the FDA in 1971, it was tested on hundreds of incarcerated Black people in Philadelphia without their informed consent. The survivors still bear the scars

We learn more from reading on paper than on screens.
54 studies, 171k people: we process print more deeply than digital content—as long as it's informational rather than purely narrative.
The paper advantage holds across ages and has grown over time. Long live physical books.

True exploration isn't about destinations.
It's about understanding people.
While European explorers focused on conquering lands, Ibn Battuta focused on connecting cultures.
This approach opened doors that would normally stay closed...

Everyone talks about the same explorers like:
Columbus, Captain Cook and Marco Polo.
But there's one traveler who journeyed farther than all of them combined.
Meet Ibn Battuta, the greatest adventurer in human history (and his forgotten story):
