ICYMI: “Acceptance based on performance makes sense to us intuitively because, as Mike Horton and others have noted, we were originally wired to present ourselves to God based on our performance, based on our doing. The implication of ‘The day you eat thereof you shall surely die’ and the existence of the tree of life is that there is life beyond the garden. We were created ‘good’ and were able to meet the test God set, but mysteriously (and tragically) we chose sin and death over obedience and life.” –@RScottClark @heidelcast @heidelbergrefo1 buff.ly/MkgUxqS

I am not linking to the blurbed book. Trust me—it's real. It stands out because 1) it's not a children's book, and 2) the images are intentionally used and commended for "devotional" use. Pretty sure one of the ends of so-called devotion is worship.

Many in the PCA might consider 2nd Commandment absolutism and/or a strict reading of Westminster to be somewhere between bad form and extreme, but the current settlement will not hold. We should abide by the standards or change them, not undermine them by ignoring them.

Those who approve of pedagogical use of images are often granted exceptions in the PCA. Still, one wonders if there are any real limits regarding images these days. Has laxity regarding pedagogy (& "legacy" images in church bldgs) normalized devotional or worship use of images?

As promotional endorsements (above) of a recent picture book by a Reformed figure demonstrate, the goal is (at the very least) private "devotional" use, which seems to go beyond the pedagogical use ("pictures in kids' books are no big deal") view that many Reformed people hold.

When Reformed people promote "devotional" use of purported images of Jesus, is it 1) sheer cognitive dissonance, 2) wishful thinking that images will not be used for worship, 3) denial of Scripture's sufficiency, 4) willful disobedience/practical unbelief, or 5) merely unwise?
