A reminder that an underrated argument for libertarianism is that you’d experience less anxiety about elections if the state had less power.
As we’re in midterms this is extremely valuable. Vote for the candidate that most closely aligns with Milton.
Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize-winning economist, once went through the major U.S. government departments and said which ones should stay and which should go:
• Department of Agriculture: Abolish
• Department of Commerce: Abolish
• Department of Defense: Keep
• Department of Education: Abolish
• Department of Energy: Abolish (move the nuclear/military piece under Defense)
• Department of Health and Human Services: Cut in half (limited public health role only)
• Department of Housing and Urban Development: Abolish
• Department of the Interior: Sell off most government land, and abolish
• Department of Justice: Keep
• Department of Labor: Abolish
• Department of State: Keep
• Department of Transportation: Abolish
• Department of Treasury: Keep (to collect taxes)
• Department of Veterans Affairs: Pay veterans off, and abolish
Result: roughly 14 departments down to about 4–5.
Government’s real jobs, he said: defend the country, keep the peace, and protect people from being coerced by others. Everything else is outside its proper role.
If September is still open on October 22, your bookkeeper is behind and you are running the business blind.
Books should be closed by the 15th of the next month. Closed means every bank and card account reconciled to the statement, a P&L and balance sheet you can actually open, and a few plain lines on what moved and why.
A stack of statements with no story is not a close. It is a data dump you pay for every month.
Signs it has slipped. You only see reports at tax time. The uncategorized account keeps growing. Your CPA asks for the same statements every spring.
Year end is ten weeks out. Whatever is messy now becomes your tax return.

Milton Friedman argued that the welfare system can strip people of independence and dignity by making them dependent on government decisions.
He warned that people may become afraid to take a job if losing it means risking the benefits they rely on.
His concern was that a system meant to provide temporary assistance could end up trapping people in a cycle of dependency instead of helping them regain independence.

If your personal return is still on extension, this is the last stretch. There is no second extension after this one. Late K-1s and books that needed another pass bought you more time to file, not more time to pay. Any balance has been accruing interest since April.
What matters now is the list: what is done, what is still waiting on someone else, and roughly what the final number looks like. Those same figures also set your fourth quarter estimate and how much cash to park before year end.
Before you file, ask two questions. Is every piece in, or still waiting on someone? And do you already know roughly what you owe, with interest since April built in?
This is excellent. Now stop Social Security and put any required funds into their retirement account. Isn’t that the point of Social Security?
