I am so so sorry, everyone, we have lost one of the greats. Ivana Markova died on Sunday 1st December. A light has gone out. For more info, see this link, where you can also leave tribute (note there will be a delay in the messages appearing). blogs.lse.ac.uk/condolences/…

Remembrance Sunday, 2024. I have played the Last Post at the war memorial for my small town this day every year for the last 25+ years. I have always played it with anger foremost, followed by despair, followed by grief. The utter waste of conflict.

This year I wasn't fit to play - it was to be my last anyway. Personally, I will miss my moment of public anger. A trumpet can sound very angry as one spits out staccato semiquavers and then drop the sound down to a horrified whisper.

When "We will remember" is said, I can still allow myself to remember. With anger.

A voice spoke unto me in the gloom. “Smile and be happy for things could be worse” And I did smile and I was happy and, lo, things did get worse. Unknown author

Incisive research by @tmburns08 . And William James would have approved of the conclusions about the effects of identity conflict and distress.

My favourite find this year #WildFlowerHour, is this Starry Saxifrage. Special to me because it means that, after 5 years of foot pain leading to an operation, I am finally able to get up above 2000ft again.

Starry saxifrage. Very happy to find this - it is a high altitude flower in Scotland.

#WildflowerHour. Not a gentian but quite beautiful nonetheless. 😀 Grass of Parnassus just coming into their own here in Scotland.

Important read by @LizzieGadd . Here’s 4 quotes that resonated with me, one from each of the 4 things:

I would add a 5th - the REF damages research culture. For researchers it means judgments about every output, usually years before those outputs have had their effect and therefore predictions not judgments at all. Leading to ongoing and continuous competition to survive.

Some considerable excitement when I saw this Grass off Parnassus flower a couple of days ago. I think they are probably fairly common but I’ve only seen one up here once before. Big showy flower sticking up on a long stalk all on its own.

And I managed to include a photo of the one I saw before into an invited paper in the British Journal of Psychology. Perfect for talking about vision and visual form.
