F/O Ludwik Witold Paszkiewicz claimed the first victory for the legendary Polish No. 303 Squadron, shooting down a German aircraft during a training flight. Having broken the rules, he was reprimanded on his return to RAF Northolt - and then congratulated! He was killed in a crash-landing at Crowhurst Farm, near Borough Green, in 1940. The memory of Paszkiewicz and the other 53 airmen will be honoured at our annual joint celebration of Polish Independence Day and British Remembrance Sunday at Northwood Cemetery in London, the second-largest Polish military cemetery in the UK. We organise the ceremony in cooperation with the Polish Educational Society (Polska Macierz Szkolna) and Bentley Priory Museum Volunteers.

Utterly disgraceful that three Labour peers spoke at the @acadofideas far-right event, which was sponsored by a Reform mega-donor and its official bookshop was run by the openly fascist, ultra-rightwing Oldspeak Bookshop. The event is overseen by the horrific @Fox_Claire.

I have to challenge this. The huge “dust cloud” that was thrown up around Brexit 10 years ago (both pre- & post-) was because businesses didn’t know the destination and what the rules would be. Joining the EU, rules are clear. Other nations don’t have “dust clouds” on joining.
"It would throw up a huge dust cloud of uncertainty." Former chief economist at the Bank of England Andy Haldane says reopening a debate about Brexit ‘would be a damaging thing'.

The behavior of the representative of Apartheid Israel and its accomplices - with their cheap bullying and disgruntled highschoolers' attitude - continue to bring embarrassment and disgrace upon the UN.
We call upon the occupying Power to implement its obligations and responsibilities under international law, and to bring an end to its unlawful occupation, rather than trying to deflect attention away from its crimes by attacking and attempting to discredit UN mechanisms and their representatives who are mandated to monitor and report on the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territory. @FranceskAlbs

Everyone on the left is celebrating Lula. Almost nobody is asking why he lost Brazil’s first round. Record-low unemployment, rising wages, and still 2.2 million behind, because banks charging 445% on credit cards took every pay rise. He won when he named the enemy. My latest👇🏾

Oh boy, are the Right excited by this graph recently published by The Economist! And of course none of them has bothered to read the article itself (TBF, it is behind a paywall!). So as always, let's add a little context and explain why these kinds of comparisons are so problematic 🧵1/25

On this Israeli election day, I’d recommend reading this extraordinary @haaretzcom interview with billionaire Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress and once one of Benjamin Netanyahu’s closest confidants. One of Lauder’s most striking conclusions: “I realized at the end of the day that Israel really didn't want peace, but they wanted dominance.” This is coming from someone who helped launch Netanyahu’s political career, introduced him to powerful figures in American politics and media, and secretly negotiated with Hafez al-Assad and Rafik Hariri on his behalf in the late 1990s. In one of the interview’s biggest revelations, Lauder says Netanyahu agreed to a comprehensive peace deal with Syria and Lebanon, including withdrawal from the Golan Heights, but ultimately refused to sign it for political reasons. “He chose politics over peace. He put his political future before the deal.” Now 82, Lauder describes his profound disillusionment with Israel’s direction. After decades of supporting Israeli and Jewish institutions, he has sold his Tel Aviv apartment, given away his Be’er Sheva property, and says he has no intention of returning to Israel. He warns that Netanyahu’s dependence on figures like Ben-Gvir and Smotrich is damaging Israel, alienating diaspora Jews and eroding support in Washington. The interview is also full of fascinating details about Lauder’s role in Netanyahu’s political rise. The two became close friends in the 1980s, when Netanyahu was Israel’s ambassador to the UN, speaking almost daily at times. Lauder says he introduced Netanyahu to speech coach Lilyan Wilder to improve his public speaking and, crucially, to Republican strategist Arthur Finkelstein, who would become instrumental in Netanyahu’s electoral success. When Netanyahu left New York to pursue a political career in Israel, Lauder threw him a farewell party attended by some of the most influential figures in American media and politics, including Rupert Murdoch and the head of the New York Times. Lauder recalls opening doors for Netanyahu and helping him cultivate the relationships that would underpin his rise to power. What makes this interview so revealing is that Lauder is no longtime critic of Israel. He had been a committed Zionist, a Republican power broker, and a man who spent decades financing Jewish institutions, cultivating relationships with Arab leaders, and pursuing diplomatic openings on Israel’s behalf. A fascinating read 👇 haaretz.com/israel-news/elec…

Today’s UN report stated that Israel uses torture and rape to attack Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and—like in Gaza—they DELIBERATELY KILL CHILDREN. You have to be sick to still defend this.

Further and higher education are in crisis. The government can no longer afford to look away. This Budget must deliver fair pay, sustainable funding and a future for post-16 education. Education is a public good. It’s time to treat it like one.
