The tapes are there because they can be broken through if someone jumps or the slides don’t go up fast enough for the reaction time, a stick would just clothesline the riders, not a great alternative. These tapes are just a bit too loose.

I'm ashamed to say in all my years of watching and adoring this sport, i never noticed this until @SpeedwayShamble pointed it out. But, I mean... It's truly beautiful isn't it? This is British Speedway. It would almost be ridiculous if it WASN'T misspelled right? Never change 🙏
