It's goodbye to the newsroom grind for the school year as I kick off my time as a @Bagehots fellow at @columbiajourn @Columbia_Biz. The reporters in this group are exceptional. I'm excited and thankful for the opportunity to spend these months in NYC with them!

This may be the most significant data breach in Canadian history. Not in terms of the numbers, but in terms of the nature of the records compromised. "More than 1.5 million Canadian Crime Stoppers tips leaked" cbc.ca/news/investigates/can…

I’ve been in seminars with American investigative journalists and had to repeatedly say “oh we won’t get that information in Canada.” But many in the public blame journalists for not asking the questions they imagine we must have just … forgotten, I guess?
Replying to @Ash_Stewart_
Canada is the hardest country I’ve worked in to get information or responses from government agencies. And I was in Dubai before this. We have to demand better.

This is what we’re up against trying to report on the CFB Wainwright tragedy. On October 18, I asked Environment Canada for the original wind-warning bulletins for the region, to make sure I hadn’t missed any and because several had since been archived online. I also asked for the timestamped XML files — or directions on how to access them myself. I wasn’t asking about the fire. I wasn’t asking for anything new. I was trying to retrieve historical weather warnings and records, most of which were already publicly available. This was their response. It took them two full working days to send this.

I have no referendum hot takes except to say that the market never priced in any risk to the Canadian oil and gas sector, never regarded the separation scenario as credible, and therefore shrugged off the Alberta referendum both before and after the vote. Market movements consistent with ordinary energy-sector volatility.

Interprovincial migration needs no one’s consent. Immigration rates do, and Canada’s high rates have always rested on broad public support. Pacing intake to preserve that isn’t nativism; it’s the most durable pro-immigration position there is.
"We must allow labour markets to work through competition yielding higher wages, training, equipment investment, automation, and better business models..." That's not the only way labour markets, or any markets, work. They also work by movements in supply and demand -- if we let them. No one thinks that Alberta should have to rely entirely on Alberta-born labour in the oilfields -- it's considered okay for Newfoundlanders to move there in search of work. But if we took the "just raise wages" argument seriously, employers in Alberta would be forbidden to hire them. So let's stop pretending the "just raise wages" argument is an economic argument. It's just the same old nativism in smarter clothing.

The Department of National Defence this morning hasn’t been answering our questions about what happened at CFB Wainwright. Here’s what one former senior military official told me usually happens behind the scenes during incidents like this:

Hope some realize now that their perception of big-J journalists “not doing their jobs” was in fact due to a great example of them doing their jobs - diligence, skepticism, verification - standards the amateurs skip because their only guiding principle is engagement
