🎧 #FifthTimeAround Six artists. Six fifth studio albums. Two days of extraordinary music. From widescreen rock and glorious synth-pop to musical adventures that challenge everything we expect from a song. What a weekend we’ve had at RadioSed! 🧵

And something unexpected happened along the way. Our listening inspired a whole new visual journey on Instagram. Music interpreted through atmosphere, imagination and imagery. All six albums are together in one Spotify playlist, ready to explore. Six fifths. No fillers. 👇

🎧 #FifthTimeAround Radiohead: Amnesiac (2001) What a record! It’s experimental, certainly, but I’ve never felt that makes it particularly inaccessible. These aren’t necessarily difficult songs. They’re beautiful songs that simply refuse to behave conventionally. 🧵

And then there’s Life in a Glasshouse. That extraordinary, almost drunken jazz arrangement. Brass instruments seemingly wandering in different directions, threatening to pull the whole thing apart. Yet somehow the song remains completely coherent. How on earth do they do that?

I think it’s Thom Yorke’s vocal that holds Glasshouse together. A beautiful melody surrounded by glorious musical chaos. An astonishing finale to a remarkable album. And that’s my Current 50 choice: Life in a Glasshouse. What a way to finish!

🎧 #FifthTimeAround New Order: Technique (1989) Substance was the record that really got me into New Order. But Technique? That’s their finest studio album for me. No question. The perfect marriage of guitars, synthesisers, dancefloor energy and melancholy.

We’ve talked recently about albums that are front-loaded with their best material. Technique does the opposite. Mr Disco, Vanishing Point and Dream Attack form an absolutely exhilarating closing trilogy. Three extraordinary tracks, though not to diminish what precedes them.

My choice for The Current 50 is Vanishing Point. Those magnificent synthesiser melodies, that relentless rhythm, and an unmistakable sadness beneath the surface. It’s everything I love about New Order in one glorious track. What a record!

🎧 #FifthTimeAround Talk Talk: Laughing Stock (1991) I thought The Colour of Spring was challenging, in the best possible way. Then came Spirit of Eden. But Laughing Stock ventures even further into the unknown. How do you even begin to describe this record? 🧵

Do I prefer it to Spirit of Eden? No, I don’t think so. But that’s not the point, Laughing Stock asks more of its listener, rewarding that patience with moments of glorious beauty. It’s a challenge I think every curious music lover should accept.

The clocks have gone back, winter’s approaching, and my Current 50 choice feels rather fitting. New Grass. That gentle, repeating guitar, Hollis’s fragile vocal… After so much uncertainty, it feels like discovering the first light of morning.

🎧 #FifthTimeAround Three down, three more filthy fifths to go! Day 1 gave us U2’s widescreen ambition. Erasure’s electronic brilliance. Kate Bush’s extraordinary imagination. Three artists. Three fifth albums. Three very different worlds. Day 2👇
