On todays The We Love Woking Show... Wednesday 20th May 2026. We are joined by Elaine Mcginty and Isla Berriman from the Phoenix Cultural Centre CIC. Elaine is co-founder and CEO of this community-led organisation behind Woking’s grassroots Fiery Bird Live Music Venue. For more than 30 years she has worked in live music, training, community development and creative activism, building inclusive cultural opportunities and championing grassroots arts. She has steered the organisation through many challenges over the years whilst supporting thousands of people through live events, mentoring, volunteering, accessibility initiatives, refugee friendship groups and vocational sound and lighting training, while helping put Woking back on the UK touring map. Elaine was named Arts & Community CEO of the Year in the 2024 SME Awards and recognised among Surrey’s Top 25 Most Inspiring Women. She is also a poet, songwriter, freelance writer and broadcaster, and performs as part of Phoenix Chroi alongside CoFounder Joe Buckley. Isla Berriman has been volunteering with Phoenix Cultural Centre CIC for over a year after attending a gig at Fiery Bird and becoming inspired to join the volunteer team. Through hands-on experience supporting live events, she discovered a passion for sound and lighting engineering, training on Fiery Bird’s professional technical desks and helping events run smoothly. Since joining Phoenix, Isla has successfully secured a place at university to study Event Production and now helps support and inspire new young volunteers interested in technical skills, live music production and grassroots venue management. We will be talking to them about the long journey to where they are now, including the ups and downs, plus we're looking ahead to their plans for the future. We'll be learning about their upcoming events, the amazing volunteers who help make it all happen, how you can get involved and the positive affect they have had on the local community in Woking since they began. We will also be playing songs chosen by Elaine and Isla, between our chat. Join us Weds 6-8pm, LIVE, here on Radio Woking. Listen here ⬇️ radiowoking.co.uk/listen
