Cambodia's free press has been largely dismantled by a government which is terrified of public dialogue which it can't control. The exercise in destroying press freedom has served to encourage others in the region.
Coming to the @FCCThai on 16 November, 7 pm - the situation on the frontline of local journalism across Southeast Asia, facing repression & censorship, and fighting back with international solidarity. With Free Press Unlimited, Exile Hub & the FCCT - free and open to all.

Theary Seng is yet another victim of Hun Sen's relentless persecution of political opponents. She should be immediately released. @USEmbPhnomPenh @USAsiaPacific @EmmanuelMacron
🇺🇸 Theary Seng survived the Cambodian genocide! But now, this American lawyer who dedicated her life to human rights is behind bars in Cambodia. Sentenced to 6 years in prison, her detention was declared arbitrary by the UN, which called for her immediate release. How long will the world keep calling for her freedom without securing it? @POTUS @SecRubio, please bring Theary home. @WhiteHouse @StateDept @aboehler @SenatorDurbin @ClooneyFDN @freedomhouse @USAmbCambodia @ThearyCSeng1 @USEmbPhnomPenh @KiriromS @hunsencambodia @Peace_Palace_KH @Dr_Hunmanet_PM @SenMarkey @RainsySam

Urgent that these peaceful young environmentalists are released. They should neve have been in prison or arrested. @EmmanuelMacron
On 12 Oct 2026, a group of NGOs sent a letter to #Cambodia PM @Dr_Hunmanet_PM, calling for the immediate release of imprisoned Mother Nature Cambodia 5 environmentalist. The letter highlighted the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD)'s clear determination that their detention is arbitrary and unlawful, and called for action on their case before the @OIFrancophonie summit in Phnom Penh on Nov 15-16. hrw.org/news/2026/10/12/join…

Speaking to the @guardian about #Vietnam's abduction of @viettan human rights & democracy advocates in #Cambodia. Asia Human Rights & Labour Advocates director Phil Robertson labelled it an “unacceptable outrage” and that countries like #Australia “continuing business as usual” was not acceptable. “[It] demonstrates yet again that Hanoi is arguably the most vicious and pernicious practitioner of transnational repression today in Southeast Asia,” he said. @dfat @AusAmbVN theguardian.com/australia-ne…

One of the many failures in the Cambodian scam compound crackdown is the absolute disregard shown to those who were tricked into forced criminality. @EmmanuelMacron Foreign governments must do more to look after their own victims: the Cambodian govt will not do it for them.
As international delegates departed Phnom Penh last week following the anti-scam conference, Cambodian authorities appear to have stepped up their shocking treatment of trafficking survivors. We are seeing a steady increase in people being sent to Mango 2 — the former Prince-linked scam compound now being used as an immigration detention centre. Even survivors who have secured places in trafficking shelters are being sent there immediately after completing the necessary immigration interview to verify their trafficking status and obtain permission to leave Cambodia without paying visa overstay fees. Authorities have also stopped allowing us to deliver food, water and medicine into the compound. We have received countless images and videos from survivors we remain in contact with, showing cramped conditions, overflowing sewage and people sleeping on floors. The limited food provided is reportedly making people sick. The only free water available is from a pipe. Survivors tell us they are being forced to pay guards for basic necessities, including food and water. People who were previously forced into scam compounds, where they suffered horrific abuse, are now being confined in another former scam compound. They are being treated like criminals. No sunlight. No visitors. And people we are in contact with are being prevented from attending medical appointments, including for conditions resulting from the abuse and deprivation they experienced inside scam compounds. This is not protecting victims of trafficking. It is punishing them. It represents a blatant disregard for the international standards Cambodia has committed to uphold. The international community can acknowledge the work being undertaken by Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior to halt large scale scam compound operations. But that praise becomes difficult to reconcile when the same ministry is placing trafficking survivors inside a former scam compound and forcing them to pay for basic necessities while they are there.

facebook.com/share/v/1EtLisK… U.S.-sanctioned Cambodian tycoons Ly Yong Phat and Kok An face allegations linking them to human trafficking and large-scale online scam operations. Yet they remain free and influential in Cambodia. Justice requires #accountability—not #impunity.
