Are you really, really, really, really sure that you need a Malinois? Sure you don’t want a Doberman? They are great dogs too!

WE CALLED THEM DOC BEFORE MOST OF THEM WERE OLD ENOUGH TO BUY A BEER. We gave them grief about everything. The aid bag was bigger than they were. There were endless reminders to drink water and change our socks. The answer to every ache is somehow involving Motrin. Then we’d pull them aside. “Hey, Doc… let me ask you something. Don’t tell anybody.” They knew everybody’s problems. And usually wished they knew a few less. 😂 But on patrol, you always knew where Doc was. When somebody yelled “MEDIC!”, nobody was thinking about their age anymore. You were looking for that aid bag and listening for their voice. Watching them get to work on somebody you’d eaten breakfast with a few hours earlier. They were treating their friends. Then, after the casualty was evacuated, they had to repack that bag and keep going with the rest of us. Some of us got to thank our Doc years later. Some are still trying to find the words. Some Docs never made it home. To our GWOT combat medics and corpsmen: we remember the jokes, the care, and the moments you probably thought nobody noticed. Who was your Doc?
