This past Wednesday, the co-pilot of Fly Dubai's Flight 1073, flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv, attacked the captain and tried to crash the Boeing 737 Max, the jet plunging 14,000 feet in a matter of seconds.
Passengers subdued the attacker and another pilot righted the plane with moments to spare. CBS News' @CBSMATTGUTMAN talks with some of the passengers who heroically helped avert disaster. cbsn.ws/4yqtyL7

The best debrief of the FlyDubai hijacking & recovery that I’ve seen.
A nice touch is that an Aussie pilot flew them home:

The official verdict is absolute Crap!
I'm a Commercial pilot (Complex piston singles) and I have followed this story from the beginning. The official story is pathetic. This will go down in history as one best examples of aviation bravery.
For this story to have the happy ending that it did, 3 things had to happen perfectly:
First, Cpt. Smit who while on the floor (being attacked with an axe!!!) thought "these are my last moments, but I cant let these people die" and somehow opened the cockpit door. Without his bravery and determination, Everybody dies no question.
Second the passengers Yaniv and Yitzhack rushed the cockpit the minute they heard screams. Dont minimize this. Most people in a situation like this would freeze in their seats. Not to mention getting the the front of the plane in a zero G nose over. I'm assuming IDF training (mandatory for all Israelis) but even then excellent reactions under pressure. By rushing to the front immediately, they were on the other side of the door the second that Cpt Smit opened it. The IDF training also probably had a hand in their ability to rapidly neutralize the co-pilot.
Yaniv taking the stick and pulling out of the dive is critical simply because there was no time otherwise. At the rate of decent by that point there is maybe 30s to impact if they keep diving (and they were already past Vne)
However, contrary to popular male ego, a non pilot successfully recovering the plane has odds near zero. Commercial aircraft are huge and have massive momentum. Even in a small plane, if you are too heavy on the controls nothing happens for ten seconds, then next thing you know you are upside down. The most likely outcome after a non-pilot pulling out of a dive would be overcontrolling and triggering a stall. Fortunately (according to Yaniv's interview) the relief pilot took over just as he leveled the plane.
The relief pilots being on board was fortunate, the relief pilot managing to take over the controls before Yaniv could trigger a stall was perfect timing. The pilots were not just random pilots or random airline pilots, they were the relief crew which meant they had hundreds if not thousands of hours in that exact model. Why is this important? Because the co-pilot had smashed the instruments (once again from Yaniv's interview) and the rudder was damaged from exceeding Vne. The relief pilots could handle this as a routine emergency, for a pilot unfamiliar with that airplane and instruments smashed it would be a insurmountable challenge.
Finally the Pilot who thought he was going to die was in luck because on board was a dentist. A dental surgeon no less. Not quite the same an ER doc, but enough to stop major arterial bleeding from multiple wounds.
If somebody doesnt make a great movie out of this it would be a crime. This is aviation history being made.

An incident? How about an Islamist terrorist act? She can’t bring herself to say the words. Might offend her voting bloc.
The safety of air passengers is a fundamental principle of international aviation and ICAO. I am deeply concerned by today’s incident aboard a Flydubai flight bound for Israel and relieved that all passengers are safe.
I commend the swift action and courage of those on board that helped bring the aircraft to safety. My thoughts are with those who were injured, and I wish them a full and speedy recovery.
This is really scary, and the actions or lack thereof by the police department is very concerning. The CBC is the CBC know wha to expect.
Toronto 🇨🇦. Jew hatred capital of the west.
@CBC goes ballistic when a JEWISH reporter attending Yom Kippur services in Toronto posts video of a Free Palestine mob shouting through megaphones at JEWS. Families are forced to run a gauntlet of hatred to enter the building. Police stand around and watch. And worse.
When the Cantor (spiritual leader of this particular service) walked outside, proudly wearing his white kittel, talit, and kippah, and smiled at the protesters....one screamed into his megaphone, ‘The Jew smiles while he murders babies in Gaza!'”
When the police officer told Cantor Spiro not to antagonize them (the Free Palestine mob), the Cantor said to the officer, ‘Really?! They are the ones screaming insults at my members. They are the ones disrupting our prayers on this holy day. They are the ones spreading hate speech. You’d be well within your rights to arrest them.'”
The quotes are from the Cantor's wife who posted this on social media.
Toronto's Chief of Police @TPSMyronDemkiw ? PM @MarkJCarney ? Silent.
And people ask how the Belleville synagogue shooting could happen? Because the demonization of Jews in Canada has been normalized. By the left, right and in between. They are all part of an extremist ecosystem that flourishes in Canada and did so in Europe 100 years ago.
This kid should never see the ice again with other kids in any form. Hell, shinny hockey even after seeing this. Right about the parents this type of behaviour was never dealt with by the parents before to escalate to this. Sure not the first incident.
Why didn't Kirk just tag him unassisted? Once he faked the throw he was literally reachable? Jays can not gift a run like that.
I went back and froze it as far forward as Bateman's bat went and it was not even close! How is this not reviewable when you have a camera down the 3rd baseline that captures it perfectly. #PleaseExplain
I never understand why Cease with two outs turns his head to check the runner at second base the swivels around and throws his pitch. How do you locate properly that way? Reason why he missed and gave up a hit and a run and didn't end the inning. Great outing though!
One thing for sure I have never been more excited about a draw come next Thursday! #USOpen
