I had a realization today about the sports card hobby that honestly made me smile. š
The breaking industry has turned collecting into something resembling the stock market. People treat cards like stocks, obsessing over values, grading, investments, and resale prices.
Meanwhile, my aideās granddaughter went on a school trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, where the kids were given free packs of Topps cards. She brought hers home and gave them to me.
The corners were bent, the packs were opened, and apparently some kids even pulled autographs.
And you know what? I FUCKING LOVE THAT.
Think about it. Somewhere on a school bus, a kid could be holding a rare 1/1 Shohei Ohtani, a numbered parallel, or an autograph worth thousands of dollars, bending the corners, trading it with friends, or stuffing it into a backpack.
And they donāt give a shit about the value.
THEYāRE KIDS. THEYāRE HAVING FUN.
THATāS WHAT BASEBALL CARDS WERE MADE FOR!
Why are vintage Mickey Mantle cards so valuable today? Because kids played with them! They put them in bicycle spokes, bent them, traded them, threw them in drawers, and sometimes threw them away. Nobody was thinking about PSA grades or retirement investments.
And if one of those kids actually knows about collecting and pulls something special? Good for them!
Thatās exactly how my brother and I were growing up. If we pulled something valuable, weād put it in a top loader, save it, and maybe sell it at a sports card convention at the mall, a local card shop, or a garage sale.
Thatās what collecting was.
And hereās the beautiful irony: While grown adults are spending thousands chasing rare cards through breakers, some of those very same cards could be sitting in a kidās backpack with a bent corner, never to be graded, sold, or even recognized.
Not every rare card ends up in a breakerās hands. Not every 1/1 ends up on eBay.
Some might disappear forever because a kid was simply being a kid.
And you know what?
GOOD.
Because baseball cards were a hobby long before they became an investment strategy.
Sometimes I think the kids understand collecting better than the adults do. šā¾ #Topps #tradingcard #packs #sportscards

What are you talking about? Did I say anything about it being acceptable in the 90s? I said that she needs to look it up because it's pretty much the same thing. Are you a fucking idiot?

B-Cide Trading Cards: SERIES ZERO is officially real.
We finished collating, randomizing and sealing all 25 packs. Every pack is hand-numbered, and at this point even I donāt know whatās inside which pack.
These are a few of the cards I can finally show you in their physical form. The cards pictured here were specifically marked PROMOTIONAL USE and were never part of the 25-pack release.
Series Zero tells pieces of my story going all the way back through my music career ā performances, people, moments and memories that actually happened. Then there are the STATIC inserts, Silver Foil Shatter cards and other surprises mixed into the set.
And yes⦠Iām only showing you the back of one particular card for a reason. š
25 packs. Never reprinted.
This started as an experiment to see if I could make a legitimate trading-card product out of my own history.
Now Iām holding the damn things in my hands.
Series Zero has arrived.
LOCAL BUYERS: I added a local option to the website, so if youāre nearby you can choose local pickup instead of paying for shipping.

Since you crazy fucking people wanna talk about this and bring up the fact that ESPN needs to fire Pat because he's smoking weed or some bullshit. Lay the fuck off Get off your high horses. He's living the dream.
Look at this fucking guy, this is the reason why the hobby of trading cards is being bought by rich douchebags. We need to get rid of people like Andy Jones who think that a card might be worth a Lamborghini. This is probably somebody who trades in futures of sports cards when really he's just collecting men on cardboard. He's probably not even collecting. Actually, probably never even bought a pack of cards in the 90s. These kind of people are pathetic. I hope you know that this has been going on since conventions have been in malls.
Letās talk about something you can never let happen at your event.
What youāre looking at here is a group of people who gathered in a hallway at the Dallas Card Show and started selling cards.
They didnāt purchase tables.
They didnāt purchase booth space.
Thatās the problem.
In the sports card hobby, everyone talks about ātrade night.ā
I love trade nights. They have a place.
After the show.
Not during it.
Vendors at major card shows are paying hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars for the right to set up, display inventory and sell to attendees.
You canāt then allow someone who purchased an admission ticket to essentially create their own free booth in the hallway and compete for those same customers.
Iāve seen this happen at plenty of card shows over the years.
Most shows wonāt allow it.
Some do.
And when vendors see it happening, they get frustrated.
Rightfully so.
When someone pays you for booth or table space, youāre selling them more than a physical piece of real estate.
Youāre giving them access to the marketplace youāve created.
And part of your responsibility as an event organizer is protecting the value of that marketplace.
Trading a card with another collector while walking the show is one thing.
Setting up inventory in a hallway and actively selling is something entirely different.
Your vendors invested in your event.
Your job isnāt just to sell them space. Your job is to protect the value of the space you sold them.
Replying to @CardPurchaser
@CardPurchaser I think you might appreciate something I've been working on. I've been a trading card collector most of my life, but I'm also an independent rapper who's been making music since 1998.
I finally decided to combine those two worlds and created my own actual trading card set.
I'm calling the first release Series Zero because it's literally my proof of concept.
I'm only making 25 individually numbered packs to test the waters. Seven mystery collectible cards per pack, and Series Zero will never be reprinted.
I've even randomized the release before the numbered pack fronts are assigned, so I won't know which numbered pack contains the Gold 1/1 or the other major hits.
The cards tell pieces of my 25+ years in underground hip-hop through the photos and stories on the backs, so in a weird way this has combined music, writing, graphic design and the hobby I've loved most of my life.
I'm not trying to pretend I'm Topps. š I'm just a collector who wanted to see if I could build something that other collectors would actually have fun opening.
