Medal of Honor Monday ๐บ๐ธ๐๏ธ
Born on August 5, 1895, in Newark, New Jersey, William Sawelson would grow up to become an American hero whose courage and compassion would forever be remembered.
On October 26, 1918, at just 23 years old, Sergeant Sawelson of Company M, 312th Infantry, 78th Division, U.S. Army, made the ultimate sacrifice during World War I near Grandprรฉ, France.
Amid heavy enemy machine gun fire, Sergeant Sawelson heard a wounded fellow soldier calling for water from a shell hole. Without hesitation, he left the safety of his position and crawled through enemy fire to reach him, giving the wounded man what remained in his canteen.
But his compassion did not end there. He returned to his own position to obtain more water and was making his way back to his wounded comrade when an enemy machine gun bullet took his life.
For his extraordinary bravery and selflessness, Sergeant Sawelson was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1919. His father, Jacob Sawelson, received the honor on his behalf.
Today, Sergeant Sawelson rests at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in France, among the brave Americans who gave everything for their country.
Only 23 years old, he chose to risk his life to comfort another soldier. His final act reminds us that heroism is not only found in battle, but also in compassion, sacrifice, and love for one's fellow man.
May we never forget Sergeant William Sawelson and the generations of American heroes who gave their tomorrows for our freedom. God bless them all. ๐บ๐ธ๐๏ธ๐
