From the moment I first gazed toward the heavens, I have been infatuated with the weather. From the way clouds transform the sky to the quiet of a midwinter snow to the awesome power of a hurricane, I knew that weather would always be part of my life.
As the father of an autistic child, life has thrown more than a few curveballs my way. But it has also taught more than a few lessons.
Determination, forbearance, forgiveness, and humility are not easy lessons to learn, but life continues to shower me with opportunities to do so, and I continue to try and learn them.
Until recently, I have not had time to fully pursue my passion for the weather. Now I can. I hope to share that with you at this time and in this space.
Thank you for supporting me and for spending your time enjoying the wonderful world of weather with me.
I'm blessed to be here, and only by the grace of God am I able to do this. And there are more exciting things to come, so stay tuned!

Introducing The GMWeather Model ❄️
I found the 10 past winters that look most like this one, pulled their real snowfall totals, and blended in the Euro model.
The verdict: Virginia and the Carolinas lean snowier, and the Great Lakes lean less.
It's a lean, not a guarantee.

NOAA released the new Coastal Ocean Reanalysis (CORA) dataset for the U.S. West Coast, Hawaii, and southern Alaska, and a new Experimental High-Resolution High Tide Flooding Outlook. This dataset and Experimental Outlook advance NOAA’s ability to better serve our nation’s coastal communities by providing data to support coastal flood planning and mitigation efforts. The last strong El Niño winter with a November polar vortex disruption was 2009–2010, which ended up colder than anticipated, with December bringing bitterly cold conditions across much of the country. This is just one analog for temperatures in December that year, but it shows how big of a wildcard the polar vortex is in winter forecasting. This potential Sudden Stratospheric Warming event is getting so much attention because it could be the earliest on record during a strong El Niño. I would lean toward a quick start to winter this year.

This is a very interesting look in the long range. All ensemble guidance agrees. Blue is a trough & could bring storminess & the potential for cool to cold air. These are the type of looks we are going to need for us Winter weather fans deeper into the cold months. Watching mid November.
I know, you ain't got to tell me.. it's way out in range. But I find it interesting all ensemble guidance basically agrees.

Such a stable looking GFS run with the SSW (shown here at 30mb). Model runs will vacillate, but this one was a biggie with a SSW on Nov 4 still going at Nov 13

Let’s continue our look back at some of the most memorable Carolina winter storms!
February 12, 2014… aka SNOWMAGEDDON. 🚗❄️
Raleigh only got 3.7" of snow. Somehow, that was enough to turn every road in the Triangle into a parking lot. The snow started mid-morning, everyone tried to leave at the same time, and commutes that normally take 20 minutes turned into hours. People abandoned their cars on the side of the road and just started walking home.
Charlotte picked up 8.4" and Greensboro 9". Parts of Surry County got as much as 17". Down in the SC Pee Dee it wasn’t funny, with up to 1.5" of ice and around 350,000 South Carolinians losing power.
On a more personal note, this forecast was a complete bust for Pickens, where I grew up. It was one of the big storms that really sparked my love for weather!
Were you one of the brave souls stuck in it? Or did you watch it all unfold from the couch? 👇

How do you people afford this?
No, I'm not talking about the Ferrari in the background.
I mean the $6.50 small Starbucks latte. Like once a year, I got it. But people are lined up every day to throw their money away on bad coffee. That, I dont got.

That is a big ole jumbo trough up in Canada. We saw this a lot last Winter & often times it led to cold air dropping further South. This is something to watch as we wrap up October & move into the first few days of November.

It was a "see Charlotte from the Blue Ridge Parkway" kind of day.
Crystal clear visibility, you could even see it with your naked eye.
