Over the past few days, Stefano Gabbana has been treating Madonna fans to some fascinating behind-the-scenes gems from The Girlie Show. One of them reveals the story behind the iconic “Vogue” costume. Madonna wanted something “exotic” and “very theatrical,” with an elaborate headdress that also had to be removed quickly during the show. To combine spectacle with practicality, Dolce & Gabbana turned to a specialist in headdresses and jewellery who worked for Milan’s legendary Teatro alla Scala, one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses. The biggest challenge? “Getting it to stay upright!” Gabbana calls it “one of my all-time favourite costumes,” adding that it was even exhibited at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
