At first, you see Matt Hagen as a man who has lost everything and is desperately trying to get his life back. You sympathize with him because you understand his pain. But as the story progresses, you start realizing that his desperation is slowly turning him into someone who cares more about what he wants than the people around him. And that’s what I love about this movie. It doesn’t just rely on body horror to make you uncomfortable. It makes you watch a broken man make decisions that gradually destroy whatever humanity he has left. You want to feel sorry for Matt, but there are moments when you can’t help questioning his actions. By the end, you’re left with a character who is both tragic and terrifying.
