In under four years, Cambodia's government killed about a quarter of its own people.
When the communist Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, seized the country in 1975, they declared it "Year Zero." History would start over from scratch.
They emptied the cities at gunpoint, marching some two million people out of the capital and forced the entire population onto collective farms.
Money was abolished. So were private property, religion, and schools. The goal was a pure agrarian state, built by forced labor.
The Communists set out to erase anyone who might think for themselves. Being a doctor, a teacher, or a monk could get you killed. So could speaking a foreign language or simply wearing glasses.
To save bullets, executioners often used hammers, hoes and sharpened bamboo. The bodies filled the mass graves that became known as the Killing Fields.
By the time a Vietnamese invasion drove the Khmer Rouge out in 1979, between 1.5 and 2 million Cambodians were dead out of a population of roughly 8 million.
One in four Cambodians. Dead. Not by war or natural disaster. From their own Communist government.

Hiding behind being a “constutionalist” and “originalist” Lee was just another dimestore seditionist working hard to overturn our election: “Please give me something to work with. I just need to know what I should be saying...Please tell me what I should be saying."
This little "Hand Rotter" has venom so powerful that it will melt your tissue, so it will pour out of of the wound. Sharp Nosed Pit Viper (Deinagkistrodon acutus) found in Northern Thailand all the way up into China.
Another species found on my Sothern Thailand trip was Trimeresurus venustus (Beautiful Pit Viper). The specimen pictured, was observed descending into hunting position. We named this place "Venustus Hill" since there were many of this species in this area.
A Male Malayan Pit Viper (Callosalasma rhodostoma) caught crossing the trail in Thailand while hiking with friends. One nickname for this species is 'finger rotter' because of their potent necrotizing venom. Found the SE Asia, they are a significant cause of snakebite.
Nose to nose with a Palestine Viper (Daboia palaestinae) Found in Israel, Jordan, Lebanon mostly. Big viperids with long fangs and powerful venom. Any species in the Genus Daboia is not something to get bitten by. My specimens had quite a personality!
Beautiful young Dwarf Water Cobra (Naja naga) from DRC. I was this first to keep these in the USA well before they were formally named. My hand is behind her because the damn camera would not focus on her. I was relatively safe in that position.
White tailed Lancehead (Bothrops leucurus) found along coastal and eastern regions of Brazil. Pictures don't do justice to this snake. One of my favorite lanceheads.
