Poor leaders hire ‘yes’ people who make them feel safe, not people who make the organization better. Overtime mediocrity becomes the norm.

Constant improvement — that’s what the leaders and highest performers strive for. No matter how much success they have achieved, they keep wanting to learn and get better.

To create a culture of excellence there needs to be alignment from top to bottom. Alignment in vision, values, standards and direction.

DO YOUR JOB
“One of the things I liked most about working for you,” Saban said to Belichick, “I knew exactly what to expect [and] what you expected from me. I worked other places and that was never, ever clearly defined. It’s amazing to me how many people work with or for someone and it’s just assumed that they know what you’d like them for them to do. I thought that whether it was the players that we brought to the team, the people that worked in personnel or whatever, you defined for them and then you let them do their job.”

Every coach wants the same thing:
Become a champion or stay one.
To become a champion requires leaning into strengths, but eventually a coach has to develop skills they don’t do well that don’t come naturally.
Becoming a champion may require it. Staying one definitely does.

The Play Callers I admire the most genuinely view the design of an Offense as an art form.
They don't ask ChatGPT for Cover 3 beaters.
They draw and redraw. They tinker and test ideas.
When you turn on the tape, you can tell when an Offense has soul.
You can also tell when an OC is copying someone else's ideas or playing the greatest hits from the year before.
Artists evolve.
Copycats crumble.

In the long run, the opportunities that are right for you have a way of finding you. Sometimes you wish so dearly that a new relationship or a big chance will go your way. It can feel like heartbreak when it falls through. But you have to dust yourself off and keep reaching and keep working. Water always finds its level. Stay in the game, keep your energy high, and do your best each day. You'll find the moments that are meant for you.

Culture will always come down to people. No matter how high tech or fancy your facilities or set up are, your culture will always be about the people you hire.
