To every healthcare professional giving their all in their local hospital across Canada and around the world, I salute you. You are the best hospital for your local and wider community and that is what really matters. There is no best hospital, just like there is no best ice-cream. Do not take these false rankings seriously. You know you are the best when that child smiles and waves to you saying thank you as they leave, better. You know you are the best when you ease into death that revered senior, close to their home and family. No hospital is best for pediatrics, geriatrics, trauma, internal medicine, surgery, palliative care or nursing. No hospital is best for teaching professionals of different disciplines. No hospital is best for research in diverse fields. Every hospital has their unique role to play and together - and not with these divisive, lazy-shortcuts - can we as a nation care for patients. Thank you to all communities big and small that play their role in our special mission to care for the ill, in distress and injured.
