I work the night shift at a hotel and most nights are uneventful. Then last Thursday happened. A woman checked in at 11pm. Room 412. Paid cash. No luggage except a small backpack. Not unusual. We get all kinds. At 2am she called the front desk. "There's someone in my room." I said "Ma'am?" She said "There's someone in my room. I can hear them." I called security. We went up together. Knocked on 412. She opened the door immediately. Like she'd been standing right behind it. We checked the room. Bathroom. Closet. Under the bed. Nothing. Security left. I stayed for a moment. She was sitting on the bed with her backpack on her lap. I asked if she was okay. She said "He found me faster than I thought." I said "Who found you." She looked at the window. Fourth floor. Closed. Locked. She said "Check the connecting door." I looked. The connecting door to room 414 was unlocked from the other side. I looked at her. She said "I didn't unlock it." I called the front desk from her room phone. "Who's in 414?" Long pause. "Nobody. It's unoccupied." I looked at the connecting door. Then at her. She said quietly "He works in hotels." The room felt very small suddenly. I moved her to a different floor. Different room. No connecting doors. Corner unit. Sat outside her door until my shift ended at 6am. She checked out at 7. Didn't say goodbye. Left an envelope at the front desk with my name on it. Inside was a note. Two sentences.
