Patrick Stewart, who died today at 86, became Professor X and Captain Picard. As a boy, he watched his father beat his mother, and heard the doctors who came to help tell her it was her own fault.
In the video below, a woman thanks him for helping her survive her own abuse, and his answer brings the whole room to its feet.
He grew up in a poor mill town in England. His father came home from World War II a different man and turned his violence on Patrick's mother.
Every time the doctors and ambulance men came, they told her she must have provoked him, that it takes two to make an argument.
Decades later, Stewart learned from his father's war records that he had been suffering from severe shell shock that was never treated.
So he spent the rest of his life working for two charities: one for abused women, in his mother's name, and one for traumatized soldiers, in his father's.
He could have spent his life hating his father. Instead, he spent it helping others. Is that the kind of legacy that matters more than fame?

Kedar: I wish you good luck in a country which becomes Islamic day after day. And when you look for asylum, Israel will be your asylum.
Moser: I'm not afraid of Muslims... We see who bombed Iran. We see who bombed Lebanon... We see what happened to Gaza.

There is a line from ST:TNG, spoken by Sir Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, which has honestly become something of a mantra for me which has gotten me through difficult times.
โIt is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life."
When I say it to myself, I hear it in his voice. So as parasocial as it might sound, I do feel like Iโve lost someone who has had a profound influence on me and carried me through some of my darkest moments โ and will probably carry me in moments to come.
My heart goes out to his family and friends, and to all the people whose lives he touched, in whatever way that may be. He truly was an incredible man. ๐

Patrick was one of those icons who we somehow all took for granted would always be with us.
I grew up as a fan, and was later gifted the privilege of becoming a colleague and friend, working with him for many years on โAmerican Dad!โ, โFamily Guyโ, and โTedโ. He was that rare actor who could take any bit of dialogue and elevate it, making a good writer sound great, and a great writer sound masterful. He was also as humble as they come. I remember exchanging emails with him a number of years ago when he was beginning day 1 of a new film. He commented to me that he always walked onto a new set feeling like the biggest novice there. My stunned reaction was the same as anyoneโs would be. I said, โPatrick, if you feel that way, the rest of us are screwed.โ We have lost a legendary actor today, and for many of us, a good friend. He will be deeply missed by the entire planet.

This scene from the episode "The Drumhead" is always relevent, especially in today's climate.
โThe line must be drawn here! This far, no further.โ
One of my favorite ever Patrick Stewart/Captain Picard scenes:

I refuse to tolerate this blanket, blatant racism and Islamaphobia. No thank you. I. AM. OVER. IT.

Patrick Stewart on Trump (2017): โYou might say to me, well, youโre not an American, what has it got to do with you? The fact is when America sneezes, the world catches a cold. America I think is on the edge of a very bad flu infection and itโs because of the man whoโs in the White Houseโ

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admirationย for him and his work.
My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.
