Govt planning c. 100 new data centres by early 2030s, mostly in water stressed areas - with no legal duty to disclose how much water they use. Meanwhile Govt launches £75m publicity campaign to urge us to reduce water use & privatised water companies waste 19% thro leaks. Madness

The latest in the series of letters to Kirsteen is about wildflowers, our green Highland summer. While the South has baked & burned, life has bloomed here, cocooned from heat & fire. But the worry still bites, the melancholy grows. We do what we can.

"Kemi Badenoch has chosen an abominable political moment to flirt with climate nihilism. The anti-green backlash has already peaked and electrotech is fast winning the global economic argument. The great European fires of 2026 are psychologically different from earlier heatwaves. Sensors have recorded temperatures of 1,100C in the convection firestorms of the French Gironde, hot enough to create pyrocumulonimbus conditions that generate their own wind systems.
There comes a point when you have to conclude that the Tories have gone Trumpian on the existential issue of our time, competing with Nigel Farage’s crypto party for fossil funding and the backlash vote. Badenoch’s purge of Tory candidates who dissent – either because they think it unconscionable, or because they think it is economically harmful, or both (my view) – is a fateful step for the leader of a political party that endured longer than any other on earth precisely because it is not narrow and factional."

Brilliant reporting from @Channel4News - at last parts of the media are finally joining the dots between a planet on fire and the burning of fossil fuels 👇

As governments row back on green measures, there has never been a more important time to make a lot of noise
True, many climate scientists are speaking out and taking action, but many more are still hiding in the undergrowth
This is just not good enough

BBC literally built the greatest sound library on the internet.
It is called BBC Sound Effects, and it gives you access to more than 30,000 recordings from around the world.
Just search any word, and it instantly finds matching sounds.
You can filter them by category, duration, and even the continent where the sound was recorded.
Every sound can be previewed inside your browser, downloaded, or added to the built-in mixer so you can layer multiple recordings together.
And the archive gets insanely specific.
You can find creaking ships, old typewriters, jungle ambience, distant church congregations, and even someone vigorously washing their hands.
There is a good chance a BBC engineer recorded the exact sound you need decades before you were born.

THE GEOGRAPHY OF THE ODYSSEY
Christopher Nolan's new film, The Odyssey, is based on Homer's great work of fiction. For over 2,500 years, scholars have tried to match Odysseus' journey to real Mediterranean islands and coastlines.
Here's where they think Odysseus went:

The BBC’s latest audience figures show it’s reaching more than half a billion people worldwide — 502 million — for the first time in its history. That’s more than 6% of the entire world’s population. It’s a huge achievement for Britain’s global influence.

Harrison Ford, "Humanity is a part of nature, not above it"
"We have an essential mandate to protect 30% of the world's land and sea by 2030, to prevent the mass extinction, to slow the warming of our planet"
"We are still losing nature to profiteering, corruption, conflict, including land that is already protected on paper. These efforts matter but they're not enough"
"We need cultural change"
"We need to extend social justice"
"We need to respect and elevate the indigenous people that are being marginalized, and in many cases, killed in cold blood"
"These communities have long understood that the trees, the mountains, water, soil, are not commodities, they are relatives to be cherished for following generations to embrace and protect"
"We can all play our role in embracing that wisdom in our day to day lives by loving the planet"
"By honouring nature's authority, her generosity, the bounty she affords us. The justice of her example"
"Because the world you’re stepping into, the world my generation left you, is a real mess”

Thank you so much for your support Annie. The book is exceptional and overturns many easy fallacies about wilderness. At the launch Cal read the terrifying passage about her search for the wild as sublime by chasing lava flows in Iceland. A book not to be missed.
I was privileged to receive an early copy of this extraordinary book for review. It is exceptional, a brilliant exploration of landscapes, geographies and wildernesses both of the mind and of place.
The Savage Landscape by @calflyn is simply superb.
