Democrats spent months hammering “cost of living is high because of the Iran conflict” with zero concrete plan to actually bring prices down. People felt it in their paychecks, gas prices and grocery bills, so the message landed. Their real platform was “Medicare for All / free healthcare,” which they never fully explained. The numbers don’t lie. Current U.S. health spending is already ~$6 trillion a year. Independent estimates (CBO models, American Action Forum updates) show single-payer “Medicare for All” would require roughly $2.5–3+ trillion in additional federal spending annually in the near term, climbing toward $5–6 trillion later in the decade. That’s not free - it’s a massive shift from private premiums/out-of-pocket to taxes and debt. Taxing billionaires and corporations doesn’t come close. U.S. billionaires hold around $8 trillion in total wealth. Even aggressive wealth taxes (optimistic estimates in the $300–500 billion range per year) or jacking corporate rates cover only a fraction of one year’s added cost. Analyses from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and others show you’d still need big middle-class hits: higher payroll taxes, income tax rate increases, a VAT, or equivalents. That means smaller paychecks for working people - the opposite of what the cost-of-living pitch promised. This is a pattern. - Green New Deal cost estimates in the tens of trillions with vague pay-fors. - Student debt forgiveness without a real funding mechanism. - Border policies sold without the fiscal and wage impacts. - “Tax the rich” as the universal answer that never pencils out for multi-trillion programs. Nothing is free, government-run healthcare means rationing and less choice (see Canada/UK wait times), and Dems excel at repeating a simple emotional message 24/7 while skipping the trade-offs. Republicans often fail to counter with the same relentless clarity on the full costs and who actually pays. So aside from potential cheating, Dems won the messaging war because they were more coordinated while the large Republican voices helped their cause. Even with all the highly paid consultants and gatekeepers in the Republican Party, non of them could figure out the Democrats game plan. Or they did but played along.. Either way, here we are and everyone's confused and trying to blame one thing or another.
