Born in 1915, Ismat Chughtai, one of the most prominent fiction writers of the non-traditional kind, grew up to become a daring and celebrated voice in modern Urdu literature. From a young age, she was a natural rebel who fought against her family's strict traditions just to get a higher education. As a writer, she refused to follow the rules, focusing instead on the hidden lives, emotions, and desires of ordinary women. Her fearless honesty even led to a famous court trial over her 1941 story Lihaf, which explored female intimacy at a time when such topics were strictly forbidden. Later in life, she brought her brilliant storytelling to the Mumbai film industry, writing successful scripts for classic movies like Garm Hawa. India honored her lifelong courage with the Padma Shri in 1975, and though she passed away in 1991, her fearless spirit continues to inspire readers today. Anand Narain Mulla (1901–1997) was a prominent symbol of India’s secular heritage, fiercely dedicated to Urdu, which he cherished as his mother tongue. Born to a Kashmiri family in Lucknow, he built a highly successful legal career that culminated in his appointment as a High Court judge in 1955. Mulla later transitioned into politics, serving in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha while also chairing the Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu. Although he initially wrote poetry in English, he eventually embraced Urdu literature, shaped heavily by Lucknow’s culture and the influence of Iqbal.
