My father was murdered in a bomb attack in Dublin Airport in 1975. The crime was perpetrated by loyalist paramilitaries, probably with the assistance of British security forces/services. Should we give up our quest for justice? justiceforjohnhayes.com

My contribution from the debate last night on the Troubles Legacy Bill. It needs a lot of improvement but we can’t miss this last chance to help victims get truth and justice.

It is "inconceivable" that the loyalist killing of a Gaelic football fan during the Troubles could have been planned and carried out without the involvement of the security forces, a court hears.

Unbelievable crass use of words by @RhonddaBryant that some families may get "closure" - "healing" from participation in Legacy Commission but can't give families "full disclosure" - it could appear to victims' families & survivors that this is the epitome of "gaslighting"
The relatives said that they have “listened with great concern and growing anger to the tone of recent discussions about how to resolve the legacy of the conflict.
“We have read government statements and press releases and followed debates in parliament and recent media interventions made on the legacy – our legacy,” they said.
“It is as if we don’t exist and the only ‘real victims’ are veterans.”

Scores of bereaved families opposed to Troubles Bill issue joint letter to the British Secretary of State Yesterday almost 200 families issued a letter through Relatives for Justice and the Pat Finucane Centre to Secretary of State Chris Bryant MP.
All of the families, bereaved by the British army and the RUC, have agreed the following text, which speaks for itself:
Dear Mr Bryant,
We are writing to you as families whose loved ones were killed by the British Army or the RUC during the conflict.
None of us has ever had justice through the criminal justice system.
No successful prosecutions have ever resulted from the deaths of our children, parents or siblings.
We have listened with great concern and growing anger to the tone of recent discussions about how to resolve the legacy of the conflict.
We have read government statements and press releases and followed debates in parliament and recent media interventions made on the legacy – our legacy.
It is as if we don’t exist and the only ‘real victims’ are veterans.
We are entitled to lawful legacy mechanisms that serve all victims of the conflict and are human rights compliant.
The tone of the ‘debate’ to date – in parliament and in the media - has been depressing and retraumatising for us as immediate relatives.
There has been a de facto amnesty for state forces to date, as evidenced by the lack of investigations, prosecutions or even official acknowledgement that the state also caused great harm and suffering over decades.
You are creating a hierarchy of victims which gives preference to those who killed our loved ones, which is morally wrong and cannot be justified. You must redress this.
Any future legacy mechanism which is biased towards veterans and enforces this hierarchy of victims will not be lawful and will fail. Any such mechanism will not command our support or confidence.

Thomas ‘Tucker’ Donaghy (16) and his workmate Margaret McErlean (18) were killed after they were shot by the UDA/UFF on February 11, 1974.
