The truth is bitter
Donald Duke was rather unwise in his utterances when he described Governor Douye Diri as a “local champion.”
Governor Diri has undertaken significant infrastructure projects across Bayelsa State’s difficult terrain. He understands the engineering challenges involved and knows what he is talking about when he insists that the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway is achievable.
Under his administration, Bayelsa State is constructing three major senatorial roads from Yenagoa towards the Atlantic coast: Brass, Southern Ijaw, and Ekeremor (Agge), where the proposed Bayelsa State seaport will be located.
Consider the Yenagoa–Brass road alone. The state government has constructed over 39 bridges, with more expected as the project progresses. Even within Yenagoa, Governor Diri has expanded the state capital through road construction and bridges across difficult, swampy terrain.
These are not ordinary engineering challenges. They require technical expertise, resources, determination, and a clear vision of what infrastructure can do for a people.
The Niger Delta's terrain is difficult, but it is not impossible to overcome.
We are demanding that the Bayelsa section of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway be constructed as originally envisioned because of the enormous opportunities it would unlock for our coastal communities.
This is particularly important now that we are moving towards the development of a deep seaport along the coast of Agge. Connecting this area to a proper coastal highway would improve access, facilitate trade, attract investment, create employment, and open up Bayelsa's coastal economy to the rest of Nigeria and the world.
This is not about political sentiments. It is about development, economic inclusion, and ensuring that our coastal communities are not left behind.
We have demonstrated that roads and bridges can be built across our difficult terrain. The Federal Government must therefore stop treating the Niger Delta coastline as though it is beyond development.
We want our section of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway completed. We have waited long enough, and we must not be short-changed.
Bayelsa deserves its fair share of national development. What is rightfully ours must not be denied us.
Listen to the word of wisdom
“Nigeria has been through a lot and we have come out of it. We will do ourselves a disservice by attempting to roll back these reforms.”
The reset we are having now is what we cannot afford go back on, it’s been identified since 1984 and nobody has bothered to fix them while the elites and the political class are getting richer unknown to the common man - Mayokun Ajibade
