On this Remembrance Sunday, as we bow our heads to honour those who fought and died in wars, perhaps we should spare a thought for those still being dragged into them.
Look at these scenes from Ukraine. Men apparently being seized, manhandled and forced towards military service. Men with families, children, hopes and futures. Men who may never come home.
Ukraine has every right to defend itself. But that cannot excuse the violent treatment of men who don't want to fight.
We're told to remember the fallen, to honour their sacrifice and to never forget the horrors of war. Yet here we are, generations later, watching another generation being fed into the same bloody machinery.
Politicians will stand solemnly at cenotaphs today, wearing their poppies and speaking of sacrifice. Tomorrow, they'll return to talking about weapons, military spending and how much longer the fighting must continue.
Remembrance was supposed to teach us the terrible price of war and the value of peace.
We were meant to remember the dead, not keep finding new ways to make more of them.

British Army training fails to recognise the changed face of war – Video
Instead of focusing on drone defences, elite soldiers of the British Army are using a winter camp in Estonia to battle “cold feet” and practice the completely outdated bayonet stab.

Russia’s🇷🇺 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Ukraine:
‘Our conscience is clear. Russia accepted the US’ offer that was made at the Anchorage Summit. It is not our fault that the US could not withstand the unprecedented pressure from Europe.’
Trump is incapable to make an agreement and do the necessary work to honour its commitments. He could rein in the European vassal states by exercising the enormous leverage the US has to end the proxy war…
Instead the neocons around him sold him the idea of the Ukraine proxy war as a profiteering opportunity for the military-industrial complex, by transforming the aid effort for Zelensky into Europe purchasing the arms from Washington to send to Ukraine, instead of free deliveries.
Trump, like many other Presidents before him, is incapable of reining in the CIA, which has directly disobeyed his orders for de-escalation, and instead has pursued its own policy of continuing the proxy war and ignoring the President.
Brandon Weichert: ‘Trump-Putin-Xi Summit will be a MEANINGLESS PHOTO-OP. The Ukraine proxy war will continue because the CIA is ROGUE.’
‘If this trilateral summit happens at all it’ll be nothing. It’ll be meaningless because Trump’s a lame duck. Anything he said, and by the way, he’s agreement incapable as Lavrov said. This is true.
Even without losing the majorities in Congress, he was always agreement incapable because he’s surrounded by pro-Ukraine neocons. So the idea that the trilat will be anything other than a photo-op.
But Ukraine in particular is not the President’s war. He clearly has given orders to de-escalate, and CIA is doing whatever they want because CIA is rogue under this President. No one has the ability to rein CIA in.
And having Ratcliffe, who’s deeply compromised and weak, and in agreement with the war, having Ratcliffe as the top of the agency allows the CIA bureaucracy to run wild while Ratcliffe runs interference. So the Ukraine war will continue.
As for the Democrats, this is where in terms of foreign policy, they’re right on the Middle East. They’re way off on Ukraine…
So you have a lot of problems in terms of getting the Democrats to be reasonable on the Ukraine war. So in that way, yes it’s more worrying.
However, I do not believe the Russians will use nuclear weapons, even if the war continues. I think that Putin has been much more even-handed in this than the Americans have been.’

Of course, it's fashionable to sneer at anything remotely socialist. Mention China and out come the tired stereotypes about cheap labour, bowls of rice and a population supposedly incapable of doing anything but copying Western inventions.
Well, somebody forgot to tell the Chinese.
While we've spent decades outsourcing our industries, selling off our national assets and accepting managed decline as though it were some unavoidable law of economics, China has been building an industrial powerhouse.
The country once dismissed as the world's factory for cheap imitations now leads the world in international patent applications. It builds infrastructure, develops advanced technology and competes at the cutting edge of manufacturing. It also has one of the world's largest populations of dollar millionaires. So much for the old caricatures.
And here's the uncomfortable part. We've helped finance that extraordinary rise through decades of imports, while our own industrial communities have watched factories close, skilled jobs disappear and productive capacity move overseas. Western corporations enjoyed the profits. The working class was left to pick up the pieces.
China has its own problems, including inequality and workers' rights, as have many countries. But dismissing its achievements because its economic model doesn't fit Western political orthodoxy is intellectual laziness.
Now look at what happened on 1 November 2026.
Chinese manufacturer BYD's Yangwang U9 Xtreme became the first production car to break the 500 km/h barrier, reaching an astonishing 503.17 km/h (312.65 mph) on a closed highway in Abu Dhabi.
And it did it with an ELECTRIC car.
Driven by German racing driver Marc Basseng, with four electric motors producing more than 3,000 metric horsepower, the U9 Xtreme achieved an FIA-recognised speed and two Guinness World Records for its single-direction run.
For decades, European manufacturers dominated the supercar world. Now a Chinese electric vehicle has crossed a speed barrier none of them managed to breach.
There's a lesson here that goes far beyond fast cars.
A country that invests in engineering, industrial capacity and technological development can achieve extraordinary things. A country that treats manufacturing as yesterday's business and relies on imports, financial speculation and rising property values should hardly be surprised when it falls behind.
We helped feed the dragon while allowing our own industrial strength to wither.
The question isn't how China became an industrial giant. It's why our political leaders were so willing to let Britain stop being one.
It was always about profit...never doubt that...

I just received a message from the outskirts of Kiev:
"Nobody here wants to fight against Russia, and our Ukrainian armed forces are now like a bucket with holes in the bottom. New recruits are constantly brought in, while almost everyone who can, hides or flees. Even people with an exemption from mobilization are being kidnapped. Some training camps have turned into prisons to prevent people from running away. Recruits get handcuffed during their transfer to the east.
I was born in Kyiv and live there. I'm almost 25 when my protection ends, and I wish for this country and this government to collapse as quickly as possible, because that's the only way to end the situation here with the Nazis who occupied this country in 2014."

Thirty-three American Abrams battle tanks, each weighing nearly 70 tonnes, rolling through the streets of a small Kentucky town. Their ultimate destination? Poland.
Footage recorded on 1 November shows a freight train passing through La Grange, Kentucky, carrying what Polish defence publication MILMAG identifies as the final shipment of M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks ordered by the Polish military.
This is the eighth and final batch under a $4.75 billion contract signed with Washington in April 2022. The tanks are expected to arrive in Poland by sea in late November or early December, before undergoing technical inspections and entering military service.
Once delivered, Poland will have received all 250 of its latest-generation Abrams tanks, alongside 116 older M1A1 models already supplied by the United States. That's a total of 366 American-built main battle tanks, forming a substantial part of Poland's expanding armoured forces.
For perspective, these are among the most advanced tanks in American military service, equipped with sophisticated fire-control systems, improved armour and 120mm main guns.
Poland argues that such investment is necessary to deter Russian aggression and strengthen NATO's eastern flank. Given the war across its border, that security concern deserves to be taken seriously.
But the footage also illustrates the sheer scale of Europe's continuing military rearmament. Billions of dollars in contracts, entire armoured formations being modernised and American defence manufacturers supplying the hardware.
These aren't American tanks suddenly being deployed to Ukraine. They're part of a Polish military procurement programme agreed four years ago.
Europe is rearming on a scale that would have been difficult to imagine a decade ago, and the consequences will reach well beyond the factory gates and military barracks.
And that's the part that should concern us all. We are being walked, gently and almost imperceptibly, towards World War III.
Not through one great declaration of war, but through a steady escalation of military spending, arms shipments, troop deployments and increasingly dangerous rhetoric. Each step is presented as necessary, defensive and entirely reasonable. Perhaps some are. But taken together, they're moving Europe towards a confrontation from which there may be no easy retreat.
The arms manufacturers are making billions, politicians talk of preparing for war, and ordinary families are left wondering how they'll afford to heat their homes.
History teaches us that wars don't always begin because somebody wants a world war. Sometimes they begin because those in power convince themselves they can control the escalation.
And once that control is lost, it's the working class who will be expected to fight, die and pay for it...again!
