If Uppark received the same treatment after the fire of 1989 as the National Trust proposes for Clandon, what might it look like today? Thankfully, Uppark was not left as a managed ruin. So why is Clandon being treated differently? The Quick Vote decided it for you.

After the fire, Jonathan Jones wrote that there was “nothing elitist or obscure about immaculate architectural beauty”  and described Palladian architecture as speaking to something universal: symmetry, harmony, and wonder. That is exactly why the Marble Hall should be restored.

The National Trust’s plans would leave much of the interior in its fire-damaged state, with new interventions, walkways, event spaces and visitor facilities imposed on what should be a restored historic house. This is not stewardship. It is surrender dressed up as innovation.

The National Trust exists to protect historic buildings for the nation. Clandon Park was one of the great houses in the National Trust’s care. After the 2015 fire, members had every reason to expect a serious restoration effort.

Sycamore Gap was loved because it was real: a living tree in a wild place — birdsong, wind, silence, sky. So why replace it with a man-made ‘sound sculpture’ on a slab of concrete, blasting recorded voices and artificial noise?
