As someone who makes a living from betting on sport and has worked (very briefly) for a betting company and spent thousands of hours in betting shops I feel obliged to weigh in on this. Firstly, the “gambling industry” is very big and there are some very bad aspects of it which I would ban entirely. Online casinos and fixed odds betting machines within high street betting shops need to go. These things are bad and any revenues raised are completely offset by the negative social consequences of their existence. Any highstreet betting shop that has to close because of this was never really a betting shop in the first place. It was likely opened to extract wealth from a deprived area. Online casinos are just gross and I’d ban them for aesthetic reasons alone. The ads are also really annoying. There is no reason you need to be able to pay slots in bed or on the toilet. No good can come from this. However, there are lots of good things within the industry too. Sports betting is fun and enjoyed responsibly at an infinitely higher rate than the activities previously mentioned. Going to the races or having a £10 bet builder before watching a football match is obviously not the same as playing slots in bed at 4am. I think it is stupid that these activities are basically taxed and regulated in the same light. I think they are equivalent to enjoying a cigarette and mainlining heroin. My suggestion would be to seperate the products, sports betting and fixed odds betting. Heavily tax and even outright ban many aspects of fixed odds betting and reduce tax (while increasing the levies on horse racing and greyhound racing) on sports betting. Sports betting is where the jobs are created. I could open a White label casino website overnight on my own. Furthermore, there are very responsible firms and there are some very bad firms also. I’d crush a good number of online firms with fines and/or imprison the management. These are mainly small cowboy outfits set up to pick up customers who have self excluded with larger firms. There is no reason for them to exist and they can only exist if they are breaking the law. I’d also force minimum bet laws on to sports betting companies, it’s ridiculous they are able to restrict accounts if they look like they are going to win long term. That being said, there are a good number of companies who are great, the regulations imposed on them currently are pretty severe and if you wanted to lose a portion of your wealth you’d have to forge bank statements to get around the safeguards Basically, I think reducing tax on these companies is only okay if you really start punishing the evil firms and banning the evil aspects of the industry.

Gambling is not evil, and a Restore Britain Government will reduce taxes on the industry. Adults should be free to make their own choices about how they spend their own money - a wild thing for a political party to say, I know. Britain has a successful gambling industry that supports local economies all over the country. In my constituency alone we have horse racing, a greyhound stadium, plenty of arcades and more. We should be encouraging responsible operators to thrive, not taxing them into dust. Problem gambling is an issue and should be properly addressed. But punishing an entire industry, costing thousands of jobs, for the actions of a very small number is not the answer. Restore Britain will back British gambling.
