Army Air Forces Cpl. Burton Irwin Davis passed away back in 1987, and for nearly 40 years his ashes and World War II uniforms sat quietly inside an old hope chest.
He was just 20 when he enlisted in 1942 and spent nearly two years out in the freezing cold of Greenland keeping our planes and troops moving toward Europe. Then he came home, married his wife Doris, raised twin daughters in California, and when hard times hit and he lost his job in 1971, the four of them sat around the table making copper-enamel jewelry together to keep the family going.
When his wife's caregiver finally opened that hope chest and brought his urn to American Legion Post 50 in Paso Robles, local veterans didn't hesitate. As their adjutant said, "As veterans we want to honor every comrade and act as family because we are."
Today they gave him the farewell he waited nearly four decades for. A World War II Jeep carried him across Veterans Memorial Bridge past schoolchildren waving flags and a giant American flag hanging from a fire truck ladder, all the way to the cemetery wall for Taps and a three-volley salute.
"Burton Irwin Davis, your final formation has been called. Your fellow veterans are here. You are accounted for. And you may now rest."
God bless the veterans and townspeople of Paso Robles for making sure a brother wasn't forgotten. Rest easy, Corporal.
