Military leaders pre-empting political leaders - softening the ground, so to speak - about 'sacrifices' necessary to bolster militarism.
Be prepared for more taxes, less social benefits and - perhaps - the idea that war is inevitable, not preventable.

Army Chief Warns UK Must Prepare for Sacrifices on Defence
The head of the British Army says the UK’s days of not having to think about fighting a war are over

The British military wastes billions every year sustaining overseas operations. We don’t need more military spending. We need a new foreign policy.
Our latest report @TransitionSec estimates the costs of Britain’s global military strategy and its overseas deployments.

But we repeat - a conversation is not a campaign; it involves listening at least as much as telling. HMG needs to hear from people and understand their (in)security.
Peacebuilding works, is far cheaper than war, and has the public’s support. So why is it so often bypassed for military options?

'Proud', 'Hopeful', 'Happy', 'Safe' and 'Confident' are the words respondents most often used to describe how they felt about the UK helping to prevent conflict overseas.
That's what British people thought about peacebuilding in July 2026.
For why peacebuilding matters and the evidence that it works, please read and share the new Peace Works report from a coalition of brilliant orgs, not least @CRbuildpeace, doing the work.
