The myth that Sean Connery was “bored” in his later Bond films is everywhere.
But it’s wrong.
Connery wasn’t checked out; he was adapting. You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, and Never Say Never Again all prove it.
Here’s why. 👇

Or he was just a great James Bond for twenty-one years, created a second golden age for the franchise, drew more A-list creatives to the films than ever before, generated great revenue, and kept the franchise evolving and going. That is his legacy.

Ever wondered what Sean Connery thought about On her Majesty's Secret Service?
Wonder no more!
Here's the answer, from a 1971 interview.
Connery's answer is characteristically blunt, but maybe there was a residual annoyance as he'd been slated to shoot OHMSS after Thunderball.

Were entering the territory of “X is in the running to play James Bond” news stories now that casting has begun.
Just be mindful that most of these haven’t actually happened and it’s just their agents trying to drum up curiosity for their clients…
EXCLUSIVE: Tom Francis has auditioned to play James Bond for Amazon MGM.
• The 26-year-old British actor is best known for appearing opposite Nicole Scherzinger in the stage production of “Sunset Boulevard”
• Francis is one of many performers jockeying for the part in a casting process that is ongoing and being overseen by Nina Gold (“Game of Thrones”)

When the then unknown Sean Connery was announced to play James Bond on the 3rd November 1961, there was very little media coverage about it.
Nobody predicted the success that was going to follow when Dr No came out in October 1962...

"I was under regular pressure." - Sean Connery
In 1975, Connery reflected on what it was really like filming You Only Live Twice in Japan.
It lines up with everything I explored in the updated postscript to this article 👇

I've now added a postscript to my article on Connery’s later Bond performances; reflecting on further research and perspectives (including those of Roald Dahl and crew members).
It’s still Connery for me — just with more nuance.

ALT Sean Connery laughs with Akiko Wakabayashi and director Lewis Gilbert during a rehearsal at Kobe Docks for You Only Live Twice (1967). Though Connery faced challenges on location, moments like this reflect the camaraderie he sometimes found on set.
