I doodled some presentation mascots for @RhianTaylor , who is ID-ing zooplankton from the Falklands, lots of which for the first ever time. We've got some cool old morphological ID guides in our office as a result

The last few weeks in the Falklands were insanely busy, so a bit late, but here is me with my 214 sorted samples! Over 130,000 things counted - it only took me a year 😅 Now just have to do the barcoding, analysis, writing and a few other bits... 😁 @SAERI_FI @UoABioSci
Happy #WorldAlbatrossDay! Such amazing birds - I have loved having these birds observe and judge my fieldwork!!
I wrote an article for the Penguin News talking about my project on Falklands zooplankton! I couldn't think of a fun title, but I'm happy to get some zooplankton pictures in this weeks paper! @SAERI_FI @UoABioSci @shallow_marine
Happy #WorldPenguinDay 🐧🐧🐧There are 5 penguin species to see here in the Falkland Islands (sometimes supervising my fieldwork). You've got the southern rockhopper, gentoo, Magellanic (or jackass), King, occasional macaroni- and Pebble Island's giant penguin for fun!
Last month we did the last of the zooplankton collections for my PhD (ending with the highest biomass sample - go out with a bang!) In total I have over 200 samples, collected over about 18 months, so lots of analysis to do now!! @SAERI_FI @UoABioSci @shallow_marine #DPLUS148

March was a busy month for Government House as we welcomed those from the #Falklands community as well as those visiting.
As chair of the Shackleton Scholarship Fund, the Governor invited Shackleton Scholars for tea at Government House to discuss their ongoing projects. 🫖

🤩A highlight from 2023 for PhD student Rhian Taylor, whose project is looking at zooplankton and ichthyoplankton (fish larvae) here in the #Falklands was identifying two different species of lantern fish (that live in the deep sea as adults!) using DNA barcoding 🧬🐟

What a contrast we had for the December & January DPLUS148 zooplankton surveys: we went from hail, rain & lightning 🌩️ to sunshine!🌞
Some similarities though: lots of lobster krill (especially in January in Port William) & an amazing crew & group of volunteers! 😊
@UKBCFs
We've invented a new game. It's called 'tweezer ninja' and the aim is the capture as many fish larvae and krill as you can while the sample moves with the boat!
It’s heads down and busy tweezers on spring #plankton surveys in the #Falklands #DarwinPlus #ClimateChange project aboard RV Jack Sollis.
As it's #WorldKrillDay I figured I'd share the topical book I'm currently reading - the Curious Life of Krill (pictured on top of my thematically appropriate cushion) 🦐🦐🦐
Happy #WorldKrillDay! I have several krill species in my zooplankton samples, so here's a selection of photos from when I was looking at the morphology while I work on the molecular side of things!

Now that my zooplankton samples have safely travelled from the Falklands to Aberdeen, here's the stage where I was essentially playing soldiers, lining everything up to find the missing 12 (out of over 100) tubes. Next step: identify what's in them! @SAERI_FI @UoABioSci
Happy #WorldAlbatrossDay! These black-browed albatross like to keep a close eye on what goes on during my zooplankton surveys - there's always a few supervising!!

Happy #WorldOceansDay! 🌊
Clear waters and inquisitive marine wildlife here in the #FalklandIslands, with Peale’s Dolphins, Gentoo Penguins, a Sea Lion, Sun Stars & Rock Cod among many species caught on camera at Kidney Island. Make sure to watch to the end!
