Most Canadians don't realize that our supposed "Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms" isn't worth the paper it's written on. This Charter was enacted in 1982 under PM Pierre Trudeau with the insertion of the ominous "reasonable limits" stating at the onset that "The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society" which has repeatedly empowered the state to put arbitrary, political, illogical and harmful limits on our intrinsic God-given rights, liberties and freedoms.
In 1982, the Charter had replaced the previously enacted Canadian Bill of Rights of 1960 by PM Diefenbaker which did not contain the Charter "reasonable" limitation. However, even the Bill of Rights had its shortcomings and had failed to adequately protect the constitutional rights, freedoms and liberties of Canadians due to misapplication by the Courts.
At the end of the day, a piece of paper is only effective in protecting the God-given rights, liberties and freedoms of Canadians when fiercely protected and defended by not only the judicial system but by everyday Canadians. We will lose what we fail to fight for.
