COACHES: One thing I love to do is show clips of selfless hockey plays to young players. These types of plays help them to grasp and appreciate that games and championships are won by TEAMS.
This clip right here is an incredible selfless TEAM clip.
Where is the best place to get points? The ozone. What do points equal in the NHL? Money. What type of situation is the easiest to create offense? With so few players on the ice, 3on3 overtime.
Watch Artemi Panarin on this clip. It's 3on3 overtime, the team has offensive zone possession, he gives it up...AND CHANGES. Byfield comes right on for him and ends up netting the OT winner.
Ozone changes are one of the most selfless plays in hockey. High level coaches will show clips like this on video sessions the morning after games to reinforce how important these types of TEAM plays are to winning championships. And even though Panarin ends up still getting an assist, by changing he reduced his chances of ending up on the scoresheet for a teammate. Maybe it was the Hockey Gods rewarding him.
Awesome job by Panarin, and an awesome clip to show your young players!!

I was on my way back from my son’s track meet in Minnesota and got a flat tire on a Iowa interstate. I tried to request roadside assistance in my Allstate app (because I don’t know how to change a flat tire), but was not getting a signal on my phone because of where we were in Iowa, so I was looking down messing with my phone and thought instead of using the app, I would call Allstate (which takes longer). I was thinking, it’s going to take a few hours for them to get to me once I get ahold of them, when my son goes, someone is here. Like this guy appeared out of no where, dressed in Iowa Hawkeye gear and goes, “Can I help you?” Long story short, his name is Zach Twedt, football player for Iowa Hawkeyes…I just wanted to appreciate him for being so kind and helping a stranger out, who needed to get her kids home safely. He could’ve kept going, but he didn’t! What a good dude! May God reward him for his kindness today!

At an U12 game last night, the opposition coach was directing almost every decision on the pitch: “Pass now”, “switch it”, “shoot”, “play forward”, “pass here”, “Sent it”.
It wasn’t just the instructions, it was the tone, the urgency and the volume, with his voice dominating the game.
The players I coach came off saying, “That coach is annoying”, “I can’t hear myself think” and “Why are most coaches like that?”
That last question reflects their experience, although it doesn’t describe every coach.
We say we want independent thinkers, decision makers and creative players, yet how much room do we give them to develop those qualities when an adult is constantly telling them what to do?
If we direct every action, we shouldn’t be surprised when players wait for instructions instead of trusting their own decisions.

If you want to get ahead, just be easy to work with. Show up on time. Do what you said you'd do. Bring solutions, not problems. Never create drama. Be responsive. Be emotionally consistent. Be kind. People will always want to support someone who just makes their life easier.

The hidden truth of small-sided games:
Training with drills shows initial learning, then fades with time.
Training with SSGs takes longer to show differences, but learning sticks over time.

You don't need to reinvent training every week.
Find games that work.
Repeat them.
Progress them.
Coach the details better.
That's how simple training becomes effective training.
