How remarkably predictable.
Remember 2024? When Brazil blocked X nationwide for nearly 40 days following orders from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes?
Millions of Brazilians suddenly lost access to an entire social media platform.
Now Lula is promising another round of regulation, blaming digital platforms for alleged foreign interference in the election.
And who, exactly, gets to decide what Brazilians are allowed to say?
The government calls it regulation. Critics fear censorship. And after 2024, those concerns deserve to be taken seriously.
Protecting citizens from genuine digital crime is legitimate. Giving political authorities sweeping powers over online expression is an entirely different matter.
A GOVERNMENT THAT CLAIMS TO DEFEND DEMOCRACY MUST ALSO TOLERATE THE VOICES THAT CHALLENGE IT.
